Abstract:

The focuse of this session is on the role of Wikimedia Ukraine in supporting the representation of Crimean Tatar culture in Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar Wikipedias. Particular attention is paid to the new initiatives for creating and editing articles that highlight the richness of Crimean Tatar heritage and famous personalities, particularly women. Despite certain successes (effective partnerships, good coverage on social media, etc.), there are challenges that Wikimedia Ukraine faces (the main is the lack of a stable community in the Crimean Tatar Wikipedia) and so develops the strategic steps to attract editors (conducting a survey, cooperation with universities, etc.).

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of Central Asia?

Crimean Tatar culture and its representation in Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar Wikipedias may be of interest to communities in Central Asian countries due to common historical ties and a significant Crimean Tatar diaspora in these countries. This session will allow participants to become familiar with the successes, problems and next steps of Wikimedia Ukraine for Crimean Tatar culture representation in Wikipedia. It will promote the use of Ukrainian experience in preserving and popularizing the Crimean Tatar language and culture. The session may generate ideas for future joint initiatives to involve Crimean Tatars in the region in creating content for Wikipedia.
