Abstract:

Wiki Loves Earth is the world's largest photo competition dedicated to natural heritage. Each year, it continues to expand, engaging more countries, raising environmental awareness, and enriching the collection of freely licensed images of natural sites. In 2024, it attracted almost 4, 000 uploaders and around 80, 000 images from 56 countries (the record number). This session will introduce the contest, highlight last year’s results, and provide insights into the current edition. In Central Asia, Wiki Loves Earth has been successfully held in Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, capturing stunning images of the region’s protected sites and attracting new contributors. Several of these submissions have earned international recognition, demonstrating the contest’s growing impact and potential for further expansion. The session will also explore the contest’s capacity for growth and introduce new special categories the region can benefit from.
