Abstract:

Wikimedia Ukraine has been organising Wiki Loves monuments photo contests for over 10 years, starting in 2012. Over these years we implemented multiple changes to keep participants interested and involved. While there is now a community of veteran Wiki Loves contributors who deeply care about the contest, keeping the contest relevant and accessible for newbies is important. Among ideas we experimented are regional and special thematic photo competition categories (like Crimean Tatar heritage [1], German heritage, Polish heritage), separate categories for the highest number of monuments pictured, awards for previously undocumented monuments, to most prolific newbies etc. Also we use WLM competition as a platform to teach the participants about author right, licenses types, freedom of panorama etc. Freedom of panorama is one of the biggest challenges in the competition for us for years, but it's not a blocker to lead the WLM successfully.

Level of advancement: basic
Special requirements: online session
How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region of Central Asia?

The idea is to share different approaches that worked in Ukraine, so the Central Asian volunteers can use them while organizing Wiki Loves photo competitions around the region. Expected outcomes: participants learning how to improve Wiki Loves competitions in their countries or communities, have the contest relevant even to people taking part for years, while creating space for newbies, and motivating them to join next year. As many countries in Central Asia also do not have freedom of panorama it will be very valuable to share the Ukrainian experience dealing with the same challenge.
