I had the privilege of delivering an 8-hour intensive hands-on training workshop for 16 participants, focusing on the professional use of Wikimedia Commons under the umbrella of the Wikimedia Morocco. This initiative is part of the Cities Documentation Project, aimed at documenting urban and cultural landmarks while promoting free and open knowledge.

Workshop Overview

The training was designed to provide both theoretical knowledge and practical experience, equipping participants with the necessary skills to contribute high-quality content to Wikimedia platforms. The workshop combined interactive lectures, guided exercises, and real-world applications to ensure a comprehensive learning experience.

Key Components of the Workshop

1. Introduction to Wikimedia Commons:

  • Understanding the platform’s role in building and sharing free visual knowledge.
  • Discussion of the principles of open knowledge, copyright, and Creative Commons licensing.

2. Practical Training:

  • Step-by-step guidance on uploading, categorizing, and documenting images and media.
  • Best practices for maintaining consistency and quality in contributions.

3. Applied Exercises:

  • Participants engaged in documenting urban and cultural sites as part of the Cities Documentation Project.
  • Emphasis on applying the knowledge gained during the workshop to produce accurate and well-organized contributions.

4. Field Applications in Berkane:

  • Participants carried out practical field exercises in the city of Berkane, capturing photos, documenting landmarks, and uploading content to Wikimedia Commons.
  • These exercises allowed participants to apply their newly acquired skills in real-world scenarios.

5. Empowering for Future Contributions:

  • Participants were trained to contribute effectively to Wikimedia projects (including Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, Wikidata, Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wikiversity, and other sister projects).
  • Emphasis on creating reusable content that can support other knowledge initiatives.
