Commons DB Timeline
The EU funded project started in February 2025 and ends in July 2026. Below is work connected to the Wikimedia movement.
PAST STEPS
- We have set up a tool on Toolforge to be able to generate ISCC codes for images and done a test run towards a test instance of the registry.
- Introduction blog post on Diff.
- A larger "test declaration" (100,000 files) to the registry.
- Presentation at GLAM Wiki 2025 - blog post on Diff.
- Presented at Public Domain Day.
- Participated at Wikimedia Hackathon Northwestern Europe - blog post on Diff.
- Presented the project at a Global GLAM call (slides).
- Participated at Wikimedia Hackathon - blog post on Diff.
- Created an explanation page of ISCC on Wikimedia Commons along with a user script to navigate from the ISCC code (P13150) structured data on Wikimedia Commons to the CommonsDB registry and a similar purposed template.
- Participated at Oulu Löyly in Oulo.
CURRENT STEPS
- Running a larger declaration (5,000,000 files) to the registry.
- Improving an upload user script prototype.
- Adding ISCC code (P13150) to structured data on Wikimedia Commons for files that have been declared in the registry with a bot.
NEXT STEPS
Shorter term
- We will investigate, together with you, how CommonsDB provides value for the users on the Wikimedia platforms.
