The Wikimedia projects are supported by the Wikimedia Foundation, Inc., a US-registered 501(c)(3) tax-deductible nonprofit charity. The Wikimedia Foundation provide mainly a technical and legal support. The Wikimedia Foundation has been created in June 2003 and is dedicated to the development and maintenance of online free, open content encyclopedias, collections of quotations, textbooks and other collections of documents, information, and other informational databases in all the languagehttp://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Communication_Projects_Group/Board_Election/What_is_the_Board_Election%3F&action=edits of the world that will be distributed free of charge to the public under a free documentation license such as the Free Documentation License written by the Free Software Foundation Inc. at http://www.fsf.org or similar licensing scheme, see http://www.wikimedia.org.

The Wikimedia Board of Trustees manages the foundation and supervises the disposition and solicitation of donations. The Board of Trustees are the ultimate corporate authority in the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. (article IV, sec. 1 of the Wikimedia Foundation bylawshttp://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_bylaws ).

The current has been either appointed or elected for a period of two years. The current Board members are:

  • Florence Nibart-Devouard, Chair (term until June 2008)
  • Jimmy Wales, Chairman Emeritus (term until December 2007)
  • Jan-Bart de Vreede, Vice-chair (term until December 2007)
  • Michael Davis, Treasurer (term until December 2007)
  • Erik Möller, Executive Secretary (term until June 2007)
  • Kat Walsh (term until June 2007)
  • Oscar van Dillen (term until June 2007)

Kat Walsh, Oscar van Dillen and Erik Möller mandate will end in June 2007, during the same period you will have to elect their substitue.
