Impressions from the Snøhetta x Wikimedia Workshop in Oslo

As part of the 2030 movement brand project, the Wikimedia Foundation, along with its design partner, Snøhetta, hosted a two-day, in-person workshop in Oslo, Norway in January 2020. There were 34 participants. Participants from 22 countries were present. Eleven volunteers, eleven affiliate staff, and twelve Wikimedia Foundation staff were present along with members of the Snøhetta staff.

The objective of the workshop was to allow participants to collectively contemplate the question "Who are we?" as a movement. Participants broke into small groups and chose a general concept that they felt best represents the movement. Each group then built physical models or chose an existing image to explain their choice.

The concepts from the Oslo brand workshop, the Bengaluru brand workshop and the online workshops generated a total of 23 concepts. The 23 concepts were presented to the community for feedback in the March 2020 exercise "Who are we?". Feedback and engagement on the series of concepts is being used to develop a single concept from the 23 to guide proposals around naming conventions and brand design.

Outcomes[edit]

Six concepts were developed during the Oslo workshop. The process of creating the concepts is described in detail in the blog post "Listening, learning & co-creating".

What is a concept?[edit]

A concept is a tool making the complex more understandable. Concepts consolidate vast amounts of facts, data and details into a singular definition in its context. The workshop divided participants into groups to develop a unifying concept to answer the question "Who are we?" as a movement.

Concepts developed[edit]

Mosaic[edit]

Mosaic

“We are all different; separate pieces with different origins, qualities and appearances. We come together as a whole”

The mosaic is a human made visual language that can grow and expand infinitely. Most things in the universe are different versions of a mosaic: language, music notes, computer pixels and knowledge.

Themes:

Participation | Components | Parts | Infinite | Expand | Sum of all

Rayonnement[edit]

Rayonnement

“We are collectively reaching out to people”

Rayonnement means influence, radiation or diffusion in French. The word is often used in programming about / referencing connecting people. We are always reaching outwards, like an endless expansion to other parts.

Themes:

Extension | Connected | Endless | Expansion | Collective

Expand[edit]

Expand

“Flexible enough to provide new solutions”

We are constantly evolving – we are never the same. By connecting with each other making contact and exchanging knowledge, we can grow together. We should be flexible enough to provide new solutions, make room for all the voices and keep expanding into the future.

Themes:

Limitless | Evolving | Connected | Flexible | Growth

Garden[edit]

Garden

“Made for people by people”

Just like a garden, our project is continuously growing by being nurtured by people. Anyone can choose to either contribute to the nurturing or just use the garden. A garden is an open space created by people for the greater good of people.

Themes:

Growth | Contribution | Nurture | Creation

Honeycomb[edit]

Honeycomb

“Working individually with a common goal in mind”

A honeycomb is constructed by many different pieces that fit together. The honeycomb is always evolving by constantly being renewed and reconstructed by the bees. The bees are working individually with a common goal in mind, contributing to a community.

Themes:

Community | Contribution | For a greater good | In progress | Diversity

Particle[edit]

Particle

"We are the sum of many things, not just one totality"

What is the opposite of a sum? The opposite of a sum are parts. The opposite of a whole is fractions, or particles. We are the sum of many things, not just one totality. The word particle also includes the word part; take part in something! Participate!

Themes:

Sum of all | Micro/Macro | Participation | Part | Component

What happened with the concepts developed?[edit]

Concepts from the workshops in Oslo, Bengaluru and online were compiled and presented to the community for feedback in the exercise entitled "Who are we?". Feedback on these concepts is being used to develop one single concept that Snøhetta will use to make proposals around a naming convention and brand design system later in the brand project.
