The Boli Cheto Foundation, Ideated in 2020- established in 2023, is dedicated to advancing linguistic diversity and cultural preservation across India.

BOLI CHETO THE LANGUAGE AND LIVELIHOOD FOUNDATION (hereafter referred to as Boli Cheto) is a non-profit organization registered as a Section 8 non-profit company with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, India.

"Boli Cheto," a name deeply rooted in indigenous languages. "Boli" translates to "Language" in the Garhwali language of Uttarakhand, while "Cheto" signifies "Awakening" or "Jagriti" in the Adilabadi Gondi of Telangana.

Boli Cheto is a non-profit organization headquartered in Telangana, India. Our mission is to promote and revitalize indigenous languages and culture through the internet, digital mediums and open knowledge. We believe that language and culture are integral parts of a community's identity and should be preserved for future generations. By leveraging technology, we aim to empower people from rural communities by creating livelihood opportunities to achieve sustainable development goals.

We at Boli Cheto work with 6 Indian languages namely Telugu, Gondi, Kolami, Assamese, Rabha and Marathi Among these languages Gondi, Kolami and Rabha are indigenous languages from the South and Northeastern part of India.

Our mission began with a strategic partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation in 2024, focusing on the revitalization of the Gondi and Kolami languages, which are integral to the cultural heritage of their communities.

For 2025, our Annual Plan is designed to align with key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4, 5, and 13, and to contribute actively to the International Decade of Indigenous Languages.

Our plan includes:

  • SDG 4 – Quality Education: We will develop and enhance educational resources in Gondi and Kolami, facilitating access to quality education in these languages. This includes creating and curating content on Wikimedia platforms to support educators and learners.
  • SDG 5 – Gender Equality: Our initiatives will focus on bridging the gender gap within Gondi and Kolami communities by empowering women and girls through language-based projects. We aim to ensure their voices are represented and promote their active participation in our programs.
  • SDG 13 – Climate Action: We will incorporate traditional ecological knowledge from Gondi and Kolami cultures into our Wikimedia content, highlighting their contributions to environmental sustainability and climate action. We will be documenting the traditional Millet cultivation and sustainable agricultural practices of Gond and Kolam communities on Wikimedia commons and Wiki Sourcing the related book material.

While prioritizing our work with Gondi and Kolami languages, we will also address broader needs by:

Bridging Gender Gaps: We will work to close gender disparities in Telugu and Assamese Wikimedia projects, ensuring balanced representation and participation across genders.

Youth Participation: We will engage and empower young people in both Telugu and Assamese Wikimedia projects, fostering their involvement and leadership in content creation and community-building efforts.

Our focus will be on enhancing community engagement and content development. We will collaborate closely with Gondi and Kolami speakers to ensure their languages and stories are well-represented. Simultaneously, we will implement initiatives to support gender equality and youth involvement in Telugu and Assamese Wikimedia projects.

The Boli Cheto Foundation remains committed to leveraging our partnership with the Wikimedia Foundation to drive meaningful change. By addressing the needs of Gondi and Kolami communities, bridging gender gaps, and engaging youth, we aim to make a significant impact on both local and global scales.
