The Punjabi Wikimedians User Group’s programs for 2026–27 aim to transition from a content-generation model to a sustainability-focused model to strengthen the quality and visibility of Punjabi-language knowledge. While previous activities established a foundational presence, the current plan addresses specific structural challenges through targeted strategies.

1. Content Quality and Reliability
[edit]

A primary challenge is the need to improve trust in content and the reliability of information. Many existing articles lack structured review or updated standards; for instance, "Featured Articles" have not been updated in over five years.

  • Strategy: The group will facilitate community discussions to update core policies on reliable sources, notability, and verifiability.
  • Approach: By implementing a community review process to promote "Featured" and "Good Articles," the focus shifts from merely increasing article counts to prioritizing article excellence. This ensures readers find well-researched information in their native language.
2. New Editor Onboarding and Retention
[edit]

New contributors often face technology-use barriers or find it difficult to locate tutorials, which can hinder their initial editing journey.

  • Strategy: The group will redesign the "Welcome Message" on talk pages to incorporate visual onboarding.
  • Approach: This redesigned message will include visual tutorials (images and videos) covering editing fundamentals. By providing immediate support, the strategy helps new users easily start contributing from day one.
3. Documentation Gaps in Heritage
[edit]

There are significant documentation gaps for under-represented but important historic and cultural sites in Punjab.

  • Strategy: The group will launch the second iteration of "Wiki Loves Punjab" with a distinct theme to enhance visual documentation.
  • Approach: This includes a "Commons Photowalk" to identify and document historic towns lacking media. Additionally, the "Wikiproject Gurdwara" pilot will document Sikh history and culture, which current stats show is the most read content across Punjabi projects.
4. Limited Public Visibility and Awareness
[edit]

A lack of public awareness regarding available Punjabi content limits the reach of Wikimedia projects.

  • Strategy: The group will establish a physical presence at book fairs and literary festivals across Punjab.
  • Approach: Strategy involves securing rental stalls to showcase high-quality articles and Wikisource works. Digital awareness will be supported by featuring an "Article/Photo of the Month" on social media and using paid promotional tools to reach a larger Punjabi-speaking audience.
5. Community Capacity and Burnout
[edit]

Veteran members often contribute to all projects simultaneously, which can lead to editor burnout.

  • Strategy: Outreach will focus on attracting new editors to specific projects so that veteran members can specialize.
  • Approach: Two specialized workshops will be organized. The first focuses on technical skill enhancement, while the second takes a practical approach to foster leadership and mentoring skills.
6. Institutional and Academic Integration
[edit]

There is a need to leverage institutional networks to formalize high-quality content streams.

  • Strategy: The group will formalize partnerships with academic institutions through the IIIT Hyderabad Open Knowledge Initiatives (OKI) team.
  • Approach: This includes collaborating with government institutions to digitize historical archives. Furthermore, a 3-4 month learning module will be implemented at Seaba School to equip students with basic editing skills for Wikipedia and Wikisource.

12. Will you be working with any internal (Wikimedia) or external partners? Describe the characteristics of these partnerships and bring a few examples of the most significant partnerships. (required)

Yes, the Punjabi Wikimedians User Group will continue to work with both internal Wikimedia communities and external institutional partners. These partnerships play an important role in strengthening the sustainability, knowledge quality, and skill development of contributors within our community. Our approach to partnerships focuses on three key characteristics: capacity building, knowledge collaboration, and institutional engagement.

One of our most significant external partnerships is with the Open Knowledge Initiatives (OKI) at the International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad. Through this collaboration, we are organising skill development workshops and training sessions for Punjabi Wikimedians. These activities aim to build technical capacity among contributors and help them develop stronger skills in areas such as Wikimedia project editing, digital documentation, and open knowledge practices. This partnership also helps us connect with researchers and students who can contribute high-quality knowledge to Wikimedia platforms.

We are also collaborating with the Open Knowledge and the Himalayas Network, working alongside academic partners, including the Humanities department at the International Institute of Information Technology Hyderabad. This partnership focuses on documenting cultural and regional knowledge and connecting local communities with the broader open knowledge ecosystem. Through such collaborations, we aim to improve the representation of regional knowledge and encourage interdisciplinary engagement between academia and Wikimedia communities.

Another meaningful partnership is with SEABA School, where one of our Punjabi Wikimedians is engaged as a Wikimedia educator (Wikimedian in Residence). This collaboration integrates Wikimedia activities into a school learning environment and introduces students to open knowledge platforms at an early stage. By supporting this initiative, we aim to nurture young contributors and demonstrate how Wikimedia projects can be used as educational tools for research, writing, and digital literacy.

In addition to these external partnerships, we actively collaborate with other Wikimedia language communities to exchange knowledge and learn from successful community practices. For example, we aim to engage with experienced communities to better understand approaches related to content quality improvement, thematic documentation campaigns, and community governance.

Overall, our partnerships are designed not only to expand participation but also to strengthen the quality and sustainability of Punjabi-language knowledge across Wikimedia projects. By combining community-driven initiatives with institutional collaborations, we aim to create a supportive ecosystem where contributors, educators, and researchers can collectively advance open knowledge in the Punjabi language.
