The change this Relicensing, Digitization, and Wikisource Project in Santali Language aims to bring is the preservation and open access of Santali literature by making it freely available on Wikimedia platforms. Many important Santali books and historical documents are either not digitized or are restricted by copyright, which limits access for readers and contributors. In addition, many authors and rights holders who want to digitally share or preserve their works currently lack proper platforms and guidance to do so. Because of this, a large part of Santali knowledge remains difficult to access and is at risk of being lost over time.
The main challenges include the lack of freely licensed content, limited awareness about open licensing among authors and publishers, and a shortage of contributors who have the skills to digitize and proofread texts. There is also low participation from the community, especially women, which affects the growth and diversity of content.
To address these challenges, the project focuses on working with authors and publishers to relicense their works under open licenses so they can be shared on Wikimedia. It also includes training community members in digitization, proofreading, and Wikisource editing so they can actively contribute. Building a supportive and inclusive community is an important part of the approach, with special efforts to involve women and promote their contributions. The project will include a series of activities focused on relicensing, content development, and community engagement for Santali language resources across Wikimedia platforms and their sister projects. It will begin by working closely with authors and rights holders to secure agreement for releasing their works under open licenses, making them freely accessible to the public.
Once permission is granted, the books will be scanned and uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. With the guidance of experienced Wikimedians, the copyright holders will send an email to the VRT (Volunteer Response Team) to provide formal permission. This process will be completed within 10 days of the upload to ensure proper copyright documentation. After confirmation, the books will be developed further on Wikisource through structured proofreading and validation
To support participation, offline workshops will be organized at Vishwa Bharti University and LBSM College, Karandih. In addition, a dedicated workshop will be conducted exclusively for women to encourage their active involvement as contributors. Participants will receive training on Wikimedia platforms and all sister projects, including Wikisource, Wikidata, and Wikipedia

Through this project, we hope to learn how to build strong partnerships and collaborations with institutions, authors, and community groups to support open knowledge. We aim to understand effective ways to introduce and engage new editors so they can actively contribute to Wikimedia projects. The project will also help us learn how to raise awareness among librarians about digitisation initiatives and their role in preserving knowledge. In addition, we want to explore better ways to connect with authors and help them understand the importance of sharing their work on Wikisource for wider access and long-term preservation.
