The intended participants are graduate students enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (Teacher Training Course). Lack of understanding and misconceptions regarding Wikipedia, finding trustworthy sources and information, and lacking the technical know-how to edit and create Wikipedia articles are the main challenges that this audience faces. The primary goal of the proposed graduate student training program "Reading Wikipedia in the Classroom" is to help students develop critical 21st-century skills by teaching them how information is produced, how to access and assess online sources and content, and how to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources, how to recognize biases and knowledge gaps in the information they consume, and how educators can actively contribute to Wikipedia's development. Both teachers and students must go beyond conventional teaching techniques and textbooks in this digital age. Now is the moment to advance, accept new technologies, and update their expertise. Students are encouraged to contribute to the production and curation of knowledge through this training program. Additionally, it strengthens their communication and collaboration skills through teamwork.
The main approaches are:
1. Developing Critical Thinkers: This training program alters students' perspectives and encourages them to think critically by assessing sources and verifying their accuracy. Students discover how to assess Wikipedia's credibility by looking up references and citations, as well as how to cross-reference content from Wikipedia with several sources. Students learn how to be more intelligent information consumers with this training program.
2. Community Engagement: Having a session where community members participate and share their projects, experiences, and knowledge helps students learn more about Wikipedia and their sister projects, which encourages their active participation and understanding, as well as improves their digital literacy skills and knowledge.
3. Assignments: Students are given hands-on experience by being asked to edit or modify Wikipedia articles about topics they are studying. This allows them to continuously test the abilities they have gained from the program since they can also view the work of their peers and leave comments on each other's work, which fosters a sense of community and cooperation.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
During three months, the program will be phased to include an introduction to Wikipedia, discussions, practical exercises, peer instruction, assignments, assessing sources, and feedback. It is applied in a hybrid approach that blends online and in-person instruction. During the training program, we will conduct three in-person sessions and six virtual sessions. Because I am the only Punjabi community member with certification as a trainer. I'm working on this alone. However, members of the Punjabi community will assist and involve the students in their ideas, experiences, and initiatives.
The Community Development team's Melissa Guadalupe Huertas will assist with the implementation by keeping an eye on the WikiLearn platform we'll be utilising and offering guidance as needed to ensure a successful rollout.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
Graduate students in Punjab obtaining a Bachelor of Education are the intended participants. This course serves as training for teachers.
- Being an assistant professor of education, I will personally invite prospective participants, conduct webinars, arrange in-person meetings, and email them the essential information about the training course. This initiative will begin at a regional college. Following its successful conclusion, I will work with other Punjabi institutions and universities to encourage B.Ed. students and instructors to enrol in this program as well as other courses.
- Students will work on modules, finish assignments, and participate in activities throughout the training program. To benefit from their ideas and experience, as well as to learn more about their projects, we will also arrange a meeting with the Punjabi community. For students to benefit from their knowledge, and suggestions, and to learn more about their projects, we will also arrange a meeting with the Punjabi community for interaction with one another.
- Following the activities, we'll set up a Telegram or Whatsapp group to discuss, address issues, and share updates. We will invite our participants to become a member of our Punjabi community and to participate in and add content to Wikipedia. In order to get feedback on the program and utilise the information to enhance future efforts, we will also send out an online survey.

Metrics
[edit]- 17. What do you hope to learn from your work in this project or proposal? (required)
By working on this program, we expect to gain knowledge that will help us answer all of these questions:
1) In what ways may this training help students strengthen their media literacy and critical thinking skills?
2) Do the pupils know anything about Open Education Resources and how to use them?
3) Does Wikipedia assist students in developing a culture of lifelong learning and giving them the tools they need for their professional lives as future teachers?
Overall, this project aims to enhance educational practices by leveraging a widely used platform and fostering a deeper understanding of digital literacy among future educators.
