Overall, the event fostered community engagement and collaboration among Wikimedians and OSM contributors.
Campaigns
Wiki Loves Museums 2025 (https://w.wiki/GFFP)
- Activity: Wiki Loves Museums is an initiative to document and digitally preserve the cultural, historical, and scientific heritage showcased in museums worldwide. Museums serve as vital repositories of knowledge, safeguarding artifacts, artworks, manuscripts, archaeological findings, and exhibits that represent diverse traditions and histories. The project focuses on systematically photographing museum buildings and collections, and enriching this documentation with strong metadata and structured data on Wikimedia platforms so it can support Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, and other Wikimedia projects under free licenses.
- Approaches:The project documents museums through high-quality photographs and other media that capture architecture, galleries, and exhibits. Contributors upload and curate media files on Wikimedia Commons under free licenses to ensure long-term preservation and broad reuse. In parallel, structured data about museums and their collections is added to Wikidata to improve discovery, search, and downstream reuse.
- Results: 980 images were uploaded to commons by more than 5 editors. More than 50 edits were done by editors on topics regarding Museums in Wikidata.
Wiki Loves Village 2025 and Ente Gramam 2025 (https://w.wiki/FC95, https://w.wiki/G$c9)
- Activity:Wiki Loves Village 2025 and Ente Gramam Editathon 2025 are connected initiatives that document village life and improve village-related knowledge on Wikimedia projects, with a focus on addressing the underrepresentation of rural areas in free knowledge ran from 17th December 2025 - 28th February 2026.
Wiki Loves Village is a global documentation initiative that encourages people to capture the cultural, natural, and social life of villages and contribute that content to Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia, and Wikidata.
Ente Gramam Editathon 2025 is the Kerala (Malayalam Wikipedia) edition aligned with this theme, aimed at collecting and improving articles about villages in Kerala and updating related pages such as panchayat pages, while also encouraging local image uploads to Commons.
This edition is positioned as part of the wider anniversary moment around Wikipedia’s 25th year, with a regional community focus through Malayalam Wikipedia’s birthday celebrations mentioned on the project page.
- Approach:Participants take photographs of villages—covering landscapes, streets, traditional houses, monuments, agriculture, crafts, institutions, places of worship, and everyday life—and upload them to Wikimedia Commons with good descriptions and categories so they can be reused across Wikimedia projects.
Contributors create new Wikipedia articles about villages and expand existing ones by adding history, geography, demographics, and notable local features; in Ente Gramam, this includes systematically improving village and panchayat-related pages in Kerala.
Structured data work is part of both efforts: adding geocoordinates for villages and creating/improving Wikidata items with basic information to make village knowledge easier to search, link, and reuse.
Community participation is supported through local coordination (Wikimedians of Kerala User Group is listed as the organizing group on the Ente Gramam page) and by encouraging residents, students, and local photographers to contribute authentic representations of their villages

Part 2: Learning
4. In your application, you outlined some learning questions. What did you learn from these learning questions when you implemented your project? How do you hope to use this learnings in the future? You can recall these learning questions below. (required)
You can recall these learning questions below: We want to learn how to make our community stronger and more impactful on Wikimedia projects.
Specifically:
- Increasing Participation: What motivates active contribution?
- Enhancing Influence: How can we better represent our community's needs?
- Building Partnerships: What types of partnerships benefit us most?
- Measuring Impact: How do we measure our success and ensure lasting change?
- Welcome New people: How to engage new people into the Wikimedia ecosystem?
These insights will guide our community's sustainable growth and development.
Increasing participation in volunteering activities is not easy. These are the methods we used to encourage continuous contributions:
- Identify interested people and invite them regularly to events and community meetings.
- Match people’s interests with suitable Wikimedia projects (e.g., travel → Wikivoyage/Commons; culture → Wikipedia/Commons; open data → Wikidata).
- Provide simple “first contribution” tasks during the event (first edit/upload/item) along with quick support.
- Follow up after events through reminders, meetups, and by connecting newcomers with like-minded community members/mentors.
From our learning questions, we learned that sustained participation improves when contributors can see clear impact, have a supportive peer group, and have an easy next step. We also learned that partnerships work best when they provide access, local expertise, and continuity (not just one-time support). Consistent documentation of outputs (uploads, edits, pages created/improved, and returning contributors) helped us represent our community’s needs and measure impact better.
In the future, we will use these learnings to strengthen onboarding and mentorship, design events with clear follow-up pathways, build long-term partnerships, and improve how we track outcomes and contributor retention.
Community activities reach more people through active partnerships with other communities and organizations. For the Wikidata birthday event, collaboration with OpenStreetMap Kerala and the open data community improved scalability and helped the event reach a wider audience. Similarly, for WikiConference Kerala, partnerships with accessibility groups, government organizations, and other open data/open knowledge/free and open source software communities kept the Wikimedia community strong in Kerala through active interaction and involvement. For technical workshops, we partnered with educational institutions, which improved accessibility and helped us connect with student clubs—supporting student interest and engagement in Wikimedia projects.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
The collaboration with the Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA), a Kerala Government body was an unexpected partnership, and it benefited the community significantly in organizing WikiConference Kerala 2025.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
A diff post regarding the Wikiconference Kerala 2025 and how it is making an impact in malayalam language computing and community - [76]
Part 3: Metrics
7. Wikimedia Metrics results. (required)
In your application, you set some Wikimedia targets in numbers (Wikimedia metrics). In this section, you will describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used.
| Target | Results | Comments and tools used | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Number of participants | 50 | 320 | 2 technical workshops : 52+ 50

In your proposal, you could also set Other Metrics targets. Please describe the achieved results and provide links to the tools used if you set Other Metrics in your application.
| Other Metrics name | Metrics Description | Target | Result | Tools and comments |
|---|---|---|---|---|
9. Did you have any difficulties collecting data to measure your results? (required)
Yes
9.1. Please state what difficulties you had. How do you hope to overcome these challenges in the future? Do you have any recommendations for the Foundation to support you in addressing these challenges? (required)
One major difficulty was that the amount we quoted for the Malayalam Wikipedia birthday celebration and the Wiki Conference Kerala was insufficient. However, we overcame this funding shortage by collaborating with other organizations. As these events are evolving into a standard conference format, we will need to scale up with additional funds.
Regarding the technical workshops, we initially included a budget for only one workshop, but we received requests from other institutions as well. Consequently, we had to make adjustments to accommodate another institution. In terms of user retention in technical workshops, we need to organize ongoing events, which is currently not feasible with our existing budget structure. Continuous and advanced-level technical events are necessary to ensure long-term contributions from participants in these workshops.
