Main challenges we are trying to address given below.
Malayalam Wikivoyage: Malayalam Wikivoyage has been in incubator since 2012 : Malayalam Wikimedia community is continuously trying to bring this project into the main webspace.
Low content contribution: Increasing the volume and quality of India related data on Wikidata is a persistent challenge.
Limited awareness: Many people in India are unaware of Wikimedia projects and their potential impact. Also, there are many travel related communities who aren’t aware of wikivoyage and connecting them with wikimedia projects may enhance the contributions.
Lack of resources: Insufficient resources, including human, financial, and technical, hinder the growth of Wikimedia in Language communities present in India.
Technical limitations: Technical challenges such as language support and software compatibility pose obstacles to content creation and editing.
Wikimedians of Kerala User Group has organised several programmes to promote Wikimedia projects in Kerala. We also collaborated with other communities in India to bring more local language content in Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons etc. Some of the notable programmes arranged by us include workshops and hands on training sessions([1]), Edit-a-thons([2]), photography events ([3]), Conferences ([4]) and regular meetups([5]).
We are striving to increase the availability and accessibility of knowledge in Malayalam, promoting digital literacy and bridging the knowledge gap in Kerala. Our goal is to empower the local language communities in India and benefit from the vast repository of knowledge on Wikidata and its sister projects. We are also trying to motivate the younger generation to engage in contributing to the Wikimedia projects.
Main approaches to solve these challenges: To address these challenges, we are organising a series of events to connect with more people and bring more contributors to the wikimedia ecosystem in Kerala and also collaborating with other language communities in India. Wikivoyage Workshops: We are organizing wikivoyage workshops to build an ecosystem around wikivoyage and bring Malayalam wikivoyage live. Wikidata Label-a-thon : A label-focused event where participants work on improving and adding local language labels to Wikidata. We are collaborating with other language communities to improve labels in other Indian languages. Wikidata Data Reuse: The event will bring together contributors to collaborate on the reuse of data from Wikidata. Participants will have the opportunity to design, explore, and develop innovative tools that harness the wealth of Wikidata. A key focus will be on creating solutions that utilize local language content, aiming to bridge language barriers and improve access to information for diverse communities. Open Data from Wikidata: Our goal is to systematically curate and import open data related to diverse aspects of India into Wikidata. By exploring and leveraging advanced tools that streamline data edits and facilitate efficient management within Wikidata, we aim to enhance the accuracy, comprehensiveness, and accessibility of information related to India. This effort will not only improve the quality of data on the platform but also serve as a catalyst for enhancing data related to India .This initiative will promote the development of reliable, open data resources that support research, policy-making, and education in India.
These events aim to: Take initial efforts to bring awareness about the Wikivoyage projects among the public and engage the community members to start contributing to it and bring the project out of the incubator. On International Mother Language Day, we aim to increase the representation of local language content on Wikidata, enhancing the platform’s linguistic diversity. This initiative will empower global communities by promoting underrepresented languages, ensuring greater accessibility and inclusivity of knowledge. By expanding local language entries, we foster the preservation of cultural heritage and strengthen the global knowledge network. Connect with other language communities in India working towards Open Knowledge, Language, Culture and Technology and bring more open data related to India. Raise awareness about the importance of Wikimedia and its potential to promote education, research, and cultural preservation. Foster a community of Wikimedians in Kerala who can support and sustain these efforts.
By organising these events, we hope to bring about a positive change in the digital landscape of Kerala, promoting knowledge sharing, collaboration, and innovation.
