Part 1: Project and impact

Our primary objective is to establish strategic collaborations with organizations aligned with Wikimedia mission, specifically within Kerala's robust Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) ecosystem. We are aiming to revive dormant Wikivoyage projects in Malayalam and Tamil languages. We are also extensively trying to enrich data in the Wikimedia ecosystem and reuse the data into various Wikimedia projects. We organized two workshops focused on Wikivoyage in Tamilnadu and Kerala. These workshops help to revive the project with the help of editors in these languages.
- 'Activity': Wikimedians of Kerala organized a Wikivoyage workshop at Dr. G.R. Damodharan College of Science, Peelamedu, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, on 21 and 22 March 2025. The primary objective of this event was to revitalize and expand the Tamil WikiVoyage. The intention was to increase participation, enhance existing pages with substantive content, and address informational gaps. The event was organized with the help of Rangan Datta.
- 'Results': 14 Editors including students from GRD College Coimbatore participated in the workshop. 9 New pages created in Tamil Wikivoyage and 151 Edits done in total. User:Rangan Datta Wiki took an in-depth presentation about wikivoyage and its editing policies. He demonstrated how to add maps and geolocations and various color codes in wikivoyage. On the second day we done a photowalk in Coimbatore city to take photos of places of interest to be added into Wikivoyage.
- 'Approaches': Wikimedians of Kerala UG directly contacted Tamil wikipedia editors and User:Bhuvanameenakshi to organize this event. Dr. G R Damodharan College of Science, Peelamedu, Coimbatore Tamil Nadu provided the venue for the workshop. User:Rangan Datta Wiki agreed to give a detailed presentation about the project.

- 'Activity': Wikimedians of Kerala organized a Wikivoyage workshop at GUPS Chathamangalam, Palakkad on 23 and 24 March 2025. The primary objective of this event was to revitalize and expand the Malayalam WikiVoyage. The intention was to increase participation, enhance existing pages with substantive content, and address informational gaps. The event was organized with the help of Rangan Datta.
- 'Results': 11 Editors from Wikimedians of Kerala User Group participated in this workshop. 14 New pages created in Malayalam Wikivoyage and 273 Edits done in total. 244 Photographs uploaded in Wikimedia commons as a part of this workshop. Rangan Datta took an in-depth presentation about wikivoyage and its editing policies. He demonstrated how to add maps and geolocations and various color codes in wikivoyage. On the second day we did a photowalk in Nenmara town to take photos of places of interest to be added into Wikivoyage.
- 'Approaches': Wikimedians of Kerala UG approached Headmaster of GUPS Chathamangalam via KITE (Kerala Infrastructure and Technology for Education) to organize this event. GUPS Chathamangalam provided the venue for the workshop. Rangan Datta agreed to give a detailed presentation about the project.

- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User group organized an event dedicated to raising awareness about open data and encouraging its use across various domains. This event was a part of the global celebration of Opendata Day. Open Data Day 2025 centers on the theme 'Open Data to Tackle the Polycrisis,' emphasizing the power of open data in addressing multiple, interconnected global crises.
- Results: 25 students from the Digital University Kerala (DUK), Thiruvananthapuram participated in this workshop. 6 talks were presented on various topics related to open data.

After lunch a workshop in Wikidata was conducted by Athul R T and Jinoy Tom Jacob.
- Approaches: Wikimedians of Kerala UG organized this event in collaboration with Free software user group Trivandrum and Digital University of Kerala. Digital University of Kerala provided the venue for the workshop. Jinoy Tom Jacob, Athul R T, Naveenpf took the lead of the workshops.

- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User group organized an online datathon event as part of International Mother Language Day 2025 from February 21, 2025 to February 28, 2025. The members of WikiProject India in collaboration with Indian communities and user groups participated in this datathon to celebrate "International Mother Language Day" in 2025.
- Results: 4 user groups participated in this datathon. A total of 29 people signed up, with 21 actively contributing during the event. Participants made significant contributions, including 2.89K new descriptions, 2.53K new labels, and 40 label updates, resulting in improvements to 4.81K unique items and 62 unique properties. In total, 4.85K unique items were updated. The datathon successfully provided a platform for contributors to engage with structured data in their native languages, promoting linguistic diversity and accessibility on Wikimedia platforms. This initiative reinforced the importance of open knowledge and multilingual data contributions, setting the stage for future collaborative efforts.
- Approaches: Wikimedians of Kerala UG organized this event in collaboration with Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group, Karavali Wikimedians User Group and Wikiproject India members in Wikidata. Jinoy Tom Jacob took the lead for coordinating the datathon.

- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a Photowalk and Wikivoyage Workshop at Malamel Tourism, Kollam. This initiative was conducted as a follow-up activity to encourage and enhance community contributions to both Malayalam Wikivoyage and Wikimedia Commons. The workshop was organized in collaboration with DTPC Kollam. Participants documented tourist locations and contributed high-quality photographs to Wikimedia Commons. The event covered two locations in Thodupuzha and three locations in Kollam.
- Results: 10 Editors from Wikimedians of Kerala User Group participated in this workshop and photowalk. 5 different locations photographed and 615 photos uploaded into Wikimedia commons. This event refreshes the editing practices in Malayalam wikivoyage.
- Approaches: Wikimedians of Kerala UG organized this event in collaboration with Thodupuzha birders club, Free software user group Trivandrum and DTPC Kollam. A significant focus is done to photograph various unexplored locations where no photographs are present in Wikimedia Commons.
- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a 2 day Wikisource summit and a 2 day Wikisource data workshop at Kerala Sahitya Academy, Thrissur. Wikisource Community Meetup 2025 aims to introduce key topics, share community experiences, and develop a roadmap for strengthening collaborative initiatives. The event is a hybrid event and some participants joined online. An open data workshop and a Wikisource hackathon was organized as the follow up event to the meetup. This event aims to improve tools related to Wikisource projects in Malayalam and Tamil.This event focused on connecting Wikisource more efficiently with Wikidata.
- Results: Wikisource Data Workshop 2025 created a framework in Malayalam Wikisource and Tamil Wikisource to connect to Wikidata. The framework fetches details of books in Wikisource from Wikidata and creates Index pages automatically. Total 153 pages created and 253 edited in this data workshop. 13 editors participated in the event.
- Approaches: Wikimedians of Kerala UG partnered with Tamil Wikisource editors to organize the data workshop. We also partnered with Open Data Kerala and Free Software users Thrissur to participate in the event.

- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a photowalk at Shakthan Thampuran Palace Museum, Thrissur. The aim of this photowalk is to document the sculptures and artifacts displayed in the museum. The photowalk provided an opportunity to enhance the documentation of valuable artifacts displayed on Wikimedia Commons.
- Results: 3 people participated in this photowalk and 76 files were uploaded into Wikimedia Commons.
- Approaches: This photowalk was organized in collaboration with the Archeological Department of Govt of Kerala. This photowalk is a pilot project to build a larger partnership with the Archeological Dept to document artifacts displayed in various museums in Kerala.
- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a photowalk and a data workshop at India's Indigenous Mango Fest, Thrissur 2025. The aim of this photowalk is to document the different varieties of Mago species displayed in this festival. The event was organized by IMCP (Indegenious Mango tree Conservation Project) and SDCF. This event provided an opportunity to enhance the documentation of various types of Mango species in Kerala.
- Results: 4 people participated in this photowalk and 403 files were uploaded into Wikimedia Commons. Represenatives of Indigenous Mango Tree Conservation Project participated in data workshop and made documentation about how to add data into Wikidata of various Mango species.
- Approaches: This photowalk was organized in collaboration with IMCP. This photowalk is a give us an oppertunity to document various species of Mango. A followup data Workshop was conducted to model data about various species of Mango and made documentation about how to add species data in Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

Key approach: combine local culture, hands-on practice, and continuous mentorship to convert first-time participants into long-term contributors.
5. Did anything unexpected or surprising happen when implementing your activities? This can include both positive and negative situations. What did you learn from those experiences? (required)
Wikivoyage Workshop and Photowalk : There was an oppertunity to collaborate with DTPC Kollam and do a photowalk at Malamel was an unexpected request. We managed to coordinate with some of our contributors and done the project successfully. This will lead to future collaborations with tourism department in Kerala.
Wikisource Data Workshop : This is also an additional event organized with Wikisouce meetup at Thrissur. People from Tamil Wikisouce and Malayalam Wikisouce participated in this three day Data workshop. We used this oppertunity to solve some problems in Tamil and Malayalam Wikisource. Also tried to make a Wikidata based framework to generate Index pages.
Museum Photowalk : This event is also not planned. An oppertunity came to collaborate with Archeology Dept in Govt of Kerala to do a photowalk at Shakthan Thampuran Museum at Thrissur. We hope this event will lead to a more sustainable partnership with Department and can do more GLAM activites in Museums in Kerala.
Mango Fest Thrissur: This event is also not included in original plan. An oppertunity came to collaborate with Indigenous Mango Tree Conservation Project, Thrissur to do a photowalk in Mango fest, Thrissur. Also we connected with members of Indigenous Mango Tree Conservation Project and made documentation about adding data into Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
6. What is your plan to share your project learnings and results with other community members? If you have already done it, describe how. (required)
We have already shared some of our initial learnings during a meetup call with the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group members. We shared our project outcomes in Telegram/Whatsapp Groups. We plan to share our final project learnings and results with the broader Wikimedia communities in the following ways: Annual Report in Meta: A comprehensive report summarizing the campaign, including statistics, key learnings will be added to Meta-Wiki. This report will be made publicly available to other organizers and community members to replicate or improve upon the model. These efforts will ensure that our campaign's outcomes and experiences are accessible and beneficial to the wider Wikimedia community.

Cosolidate the data from various type of events is a challenge. Outreach dashboard is reporting the matrix partially. Quarry service is another tool to grab statistics. - Results: 4 user groups participated in this datathon. A total of 29 people signed up, with 21 actively contributing during the event. Participants made significant contributions, including 2.89K new descriptions, 2.53K new labels, and 40 label updates, resulting in improvements to 4.81K unique items and 62 unique properties. In total, 4.85K unique items were updated. The datathon successfully provided a platform for contributors to engage with structured data in their native languages, promoting linguistic diversity and accessibility on Wikimedia platforms. This initiative reinforced the importance of open knowledge and multilingual data contributions, setting the stage for future collaborative efforts.
- Approaches: Wikimedians of Kerala UG organized this event in collaboration with Kashmiri Wikimedians User Group, Karavali Wikimedians User Group and Wikiproject India members in Wikidata. Jinoy Tom Jacob took the lead for coordinating the datathon.

- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a Photowalk and Wikivoyage Workshop at Malamel Tourism, Kollam. This initiative was conducted as a follow-up activity to encourage and enhance community contributions to both Malayalam Wikivoyage and Wikimedia Commons. The workshop was organized in collaboration with DTPC Kollam. Participants documented tourist locations and contributed high-quality photographs to Wikimedia Commons. The event covered two locations in Thodupuzha and three locations in Kollam.
- Results: 10 Editors from Wikimedians of Kerala User Group participated in this workshop and photowalk. 5 different locations photographed and 615 photos uploaded into Wikimedia commons. This event refreshes the editing practices in Malayalam wikivoyage.
- Approaches: Wikimedians of Kerala UG organized this event in collaboration with Thodupuzha birders club, Free software user group Trivandrum and DTPC Kollam. A significant focus is done to photograph various unexplored locations where no photographs are present in Wikimedia Commons.
- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a 2 day Wikisource summit and a 2 day Wikisource data workshop at Kerala Sahitya Academy, Thrissur. Wikisource Community Meetup 2025 aims to introduce key topics, share community experiences, and develop a roadmap for strengthening collaborative initiatives. The event is a hybrid event and some participants joined online. An open data workshop and a Wikisource hackathon was organized as the follow up event to the meetup. This event aims to improve tools related to Wikisource projects in Malayalam and Tamil.This event focused on connecting Wikisource more efficiently with Wikidata.
- Results: Wikisource Data Workshop 2025 created a framework in Malayalam Wikisource and Tamil Wikisource to connect to Wikidata. The framework fetches details of books in Wikisource from Wikidata and creates Index pages automatically. Total 153 pages created and 253 edited in this data workshop. 13 editors participated in the event.
- Approaches: Wikimedians of Kerala UG partnered with Tamil Wikisource editors to organize the data workshop. We also partnered with Open Data Kerala and Free Software users Thrissur to participate in the event.

- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a photowalk at Shakthan Thampuran Palace Museum, Thrissur. The aim of this photowalk is to document the sculptures and artifacts displayed in the museum. The photowalk provided an opportunity to enhance the documentation of valuable artifacts displayed on Wikimedia Commons.
- Results: 3 people participated in this photowalk and 76 files were uploaded into Wikimedia Commons.
- Approaches: This photowalk was organized in collaboration with the Archeological Department of Govt of Kerala. This photowalk is a pilot project to build a larger partnership with the Archeological Dept to document artifacts displayed in various museums in Kerala.
- Activity: Wikimedians of Kerala User Group organized a photowalk and a data workshop at India's Indigenous Mango Fest, Thrissur 2025. The aim of this photowalk is to document the different varieties of Mago species displayed in this festival. The event was organized by IMCP (Indegenious Mango tree Conservation Project) and SDCF. This event provided an opportunity to enhance the documentation of various types of Mango species in Kerala.
- Results: 4 people participated in this photowalk and 403 files were uploaded into Wikimedia Commons. Represenatives of Indigenous Mango Tree Conservation Project participated in data workshop and made documentation about how to add data into Wikidata of various Mango species.
- Approaches: This photowalk was organized in collaboration with IMCP. This photowalk is a give us an oppertunity to document various species of Mango. A followup data Workshop was conducted to model data about various species of Mango and made documentation about how to add species data in Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata.

Increasing Participation: What motivates active contribution?
- Connect to local relevance – Events which provide opportunities to work on local content will help people to document familiar culture, language, and geography. This creates motivation for contribution.
- Provide tangible learning opportunities – Hands-on workshops (e.g., on Wikivoyage and Wikidata) motivate participants to acquire digital and data literacy skills that extend beyond Wikimedia.
- Show visible impact – When contributors see their work reused across Wikipedia, Wikivoyage, and Commons, it creates intrinsic motivation.
- Offer community recognition and support – Showcasing participant contributions via dashboards enhances engagement and pride.
Enhancing Influence: How can we better represent our community's needs?
- Promote multilingual collaboration – Partnering with Tamil, Kashmiri, and Karavali user groups during the International Mother Language Day Datathon showed effective inter-community cooperation.

- Localize training: Conduct Malayalam-language sessions and create simple video tutorials or edit-a-thons in schools and colleges.

- Promote Wikimedia beyond Wikipedia: Introduce Wikidata, Commons, and Wikisource early to diversify interests.

4. How did the Wikimedia community or your target audience engage with your project during its development or release? (required)
We have already shared some of our initial learnings during a meetup call with the Wikimedians of Kerala User Group members. We shared our project outcomes in Telegram/Whatsapp Groups. We plan to share our final project learnings and results with the broader Wikimedia communities in the following ways: Annual Report in Meta: A comprehensive report summarizing the campaign, including statistics, key learnings will be added to Meta-Wiki. This report will be made publicly available to other organizers and community members to replicate or improve upon the model. These efforts will ensure that our campaign's outcomes and experiences are accessible and beneficial to the wider Wikimedia community.
5. What risks or challenges did you encounter (related to delivery, safety, or security), and how did you address them? (required)
Wikivoyage Workshop and Photowalk : There was an oppertunity to collaborate with DTPC Kollam and do a photowalk at Malamel was an unexpected request. We managed to coordinate with some of our contributors and done the project successfully. This will lead to future collaborations with tourism department in Kerala.
Wikisource Data Workshop : This is also an additional event organized with Wikisouce meetup at Thrissur. People from Tamil Wikisouce and Malayalam Wikisouce participated in this three day Data workshop. We used this oppertunity to solve some problems in Tamil and Malayalam Wikisource. Also tried to make a Wikidata based framework to generate Index pages.
Museum Photowalk : This event is also not planned. An oppertunity came to collaborate with Archeology Dept in Govt of Kerala to do a photowalk at Shakthan Thampuran Museum at Thrissur. We hope this event will lead to a more sustainable partnership with Department and can do more GLAM activites in Museums in Kerala.
Mango Fest Thrissur: This event is also not included in original plan. An oppertunity came to collaborate with Indigenous Mango Tree Conservation Project, Thrissur to do a photowalk in Mango fest, Thrissur. Also we connected with members of Indigenous Mango Tree Conservation Project and made documentation about adding data into Wikidata and Wikimedia Commons.
