The Wikipedia 25th Birthday Celebration through Wiki Club SATI is an opportunity for us to build a meaningful shift on campus, from students being passive users of Wikipedia to becoming active contributors to open knowledge.
At Wiki Club SATI, we have been consistently working to introduce students to the Wikimedia ecosystem through workshops and activities. Recently, we have onboarded a new group of students who are currently being trained around Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and the idea of free knowledge. They are curious and interested, but like most beginners, they need the right environment, encouragement, and continued engagement to truly become active contributors.
One of the key challenges we see is not a lack of interest, but a gap in awareness and continuity. Many students don’t initially realize that they can contribute to Wikipedia, and even after learning the basics, they often need motivation and a sense of community to stay involved. Building that continuity is essential for sustaining a student-led club like ours.
The Wikipedia 25th celebration gives us a very timely and powerful way to address this.
We plan to use this moment as a community-building and motivation-driven event. By celebrating 25 years of Wikipedia, we are not just marking a milestone, but helping students feel connected to a global movement. This creates a sense of belonging and purpose, which is very important, especially for new contributors.
Alongside the celebration, we will continue with guided, hands-on activities and informal learning spaces where students can practice editing, ask questions, and learn from each other. This helps in building confidence gradually rather than making it feel like a one-time training.
Most importantly, this celebration will act as a strong encouragement point for our newly onboarded members. It will validate their journey, make them feel part of something bigger, and motivate them to continue contributing beyond initial sessions.
Through this approach, we are not just aiming for one successful event, but for sustained engagement. The goal is to strengthen Wiki Club SATI as a growing community where contributors feel supported, valued, and motivated to keep contributing to Wikimedia projects in the long run.
- 7. What are the planned activities? (required) Please provide a list of main activities. You can also add a link to the public page for your project where details about your project can be found. Alternatively, you can upload a timeline document. When the activities include partnerships, include details about your partners and planned partnerships.
The planned activities for the Wikipedia 25th Birthday Celebration are designed to create a balance between engagement, learning, and active contribution, while also strengthening the growing community of Wiki Club SATI.
The event will begin with an interactive onboarding and orientation experience for participants, especially the newly joined students. This will introduce them to Wikipedia, Wikimedia projects, and the idea of open knowledge in an engaging and accessible way.
To make the event more participatory and welcoming, we will include interactive elements such as wiki-themed games, quizzes, and informal icebreakers. These activities will help participants connect with each other and build a sense of community from the beginning.
A key component of the event will be a hands-on edit-a-thon and guided contribution session, where participants will actively work on Wikipedia and related Wikimedia platforms. This ensures that the event goes beyond awareness and leads to actual contributions, helping new members gain confidence in editing.
We will also host a series of short talks and lightning sessions covering Wikimedia campaigns, student opportunities, and pathways for deeper engagement. These sessions will help participants understand how they can continue contributing beyond the event.
In addition, there will be a thematic discussion segment around emerging topics such as AI in Wikimedia and the future of open knowledge. This encourages participants to think critically and engage with evolving aspects of the ecosystem.
To inspire innovation and technical curiosity, we will include a project showcase segment, where ongoing initiatives (such as work around Raspberry Pi and structured data) will be shared with participants.
The event will also include mini engagement challenges or contribution sprints, supported by small rewards, to encourage active participation and make the experience more dynamic and motivating.
An important aspect of this celebration is community exchange and collaboration. We are planning to invite members from two Wikimedia communities from the South Asia region to join the event (virtually or in a hybrid format). This will provide an opportunity for participants of Wiki Club SATI to interact with experienced contributors, exchange ideas, learn from diverse community practices, and celebrate Wikipedia’s 25th birthday together as part of a larger regional movement.
The event will conclude with community reflections, recognition of participants, and networking, helping build a strong sense of belonging and encouraging continued engagement.
Overall, these activities are designed not just as a one-day celebration, but as a meaningful step towards building an active, connected, and sustainable Wikimedia community within Wiki Club SATI.

All members contribute on a volunteer basis, emphasizing collaborative learning, peer support, and community-driven execution.
- 9. Who are the target participants and from which community? How will you engage participants before and during the activities? How will you follow up with participants after the activities? (required)
The main participants for this project will be members of Wiki Club SATI and the broader student community across the South Asian region, along with local volunteers and invited guests from GLAM institutions. To engage participants before the activities, we will use targeted outreach through club networks, social media, and direct communication to provide event details, share preparatory materials, and create excitement around the workshops and edit-a-thons. During the activities, participants will be actively involved through hands-on sessions, collaborative tasks, and mentorship from the core team and experienced Wikimedia contributors. After the activities, we will follow up with participants via email and online platforms to share event outcomes, gather feedback, provide resources for continued learning, and encourage ongoing contributions to Wikimedia projects, ensuring sustained engagement with the community.

The project concept was also presented and reviewed on Meta-Wiki, enabling community members to provide feedback, suggest improvements, and confirm collaboration with other projects in the region to avoid duplication and foster synergy.
