Including media files set on Wikidata item in Wikipedia articles across languages by default (Community Wishlist/W157)
Update from WMF CommTech team. Given that we have policies in place to not automatically write content to wikipedia pages, we have archived this wish. If there were suggested edits to a page, it seems to align more the the structured tasks initiatives by the growth team. |
Smaller Wikipedias articles are often missing files that got added later to the English Wikipedia article or a few other large Wikipedias.
Often, they don't have any media or the media is very outdated.
Highly relevant media is already being added to Wikidata items using the image and video fields which is why I think this could be harnessed here.
Some Wikipedias include media included in these fields by default if a certain template is on the page (example).
Here it is proposed that by default the media there is included somehow in the page. It doesn't have to be at the top but anywhere in the page. By default means people can simply remove it if they find it not useful or having language issues. Also a version of the media per language could be added to the Wikidata item.
Adding useful media is a pain – one can't add them to all the language Wikipedias at once and this would also be a way for that.
For example I think this brief explanatory video in English with captions is useful across languages in the article on ultrasound imaging because many readers of it can understand English (and the file's media legend in the article could say that it's in English) and there can also be captions. Another example is updating old charts, especially with SVG files – for example many uses here could be replaced with a newer chart and some charts are relevant across language Wikipedias where a way to add or change them across languages would be very useful.
Editors can still remove the media but usually it is better than having no media for example – it's just there by default. They can also move it to another place in the article and change the captions.
Only very few Wikipedias use templates to include media from the Wikipedia items and those that do don't include it in most articles.
