Add native support for AMOLED (black background) dark mode as theme option (Community Wishlist/W160)

Description

AMOLED dark mode is an existing option in the "Gadgets" section of Preferences, and for a certain subset of users this mode is preferable to the standard dark mode. The change would be twofold:

• Add support for this black background dark mode in the same manner as the other theme (it appears that currently the page must first load before the gadget can take effect) to reduce the flickering that happens when someone with the mode enabled first loads a page.
• Move this option from Gadgets, which is oftentimes a confusing mess, to the same places that the new standard dark mode is placed, i.e. to the right of articles and possibly preferences.

Support With the caveat that MediaWiki's native dark mode is already pretty dark, so a fulfillment of this wish might mean providing a lighter dark mode rather than a darker dark mode. Nardog (talk) 11:59, 3 November 2025
