기본 검색에는 페이지 제목에서 정확한 일치 항목을 찾을 수 없을 때를 위한 "자동 제안" 기능이 있지만 매우 제한적입니다. 문자를 여러 번 입력하는 것과 같은 일반적인 오타를 처리할 수 있는 기능이 없습니다. 따라서 검색어가 기존 페이지 제목과 다른 경우(예: 문자 추가)에도 제안 기능은 해당 검색어를 찾지 못하고 검색자가 찾고 있던 것이 아닌 먼 관련 제안 결과만 제공하는 경향이 있습니다. 이는 일반인에게 유용성을 심각하게 감소시킵니다. (그래서 대부분 외부 검색 엔진을 대신 사용합니다.)
한 가지 예: Australite는 문서이지만 "Australlite"를 검색하면 "Australie"에 대한 제안 결과가 대신 표시됩니다. 여기서 관련된 화려한 용어는 "편집 거리"입니다. 두 문자열의 유사성입니다. 철자 교정과 같은 기능을 위해 문자열 간의 "편집 거리"를 결정하는 많은 알고리즘과 소프트웨어 라이브러리가 있습니다.
