More base layers for Wikimedia Maps (Kartographer) (Community Wishlist/W323)
Appearance
Long-term opportunity
Description
Wikipedia maps are great but sometimes a bit limited when it comes to showing natural features like lakes and mountains.
It would be awesome if we could add at least a second base layer such as Mapstrack on OSM or like this Mapbox style.

Support OpenStreetMap has many layers that offer diferent types of information, this would be really cool and useful, I'm surprised it's not already implemented. It's moon (talk) 10:32, October 7, 2025
Support This should help readers verify maps faster, so it's a goal in line with our core policies. Joy (talk) 08:41, February 6, 2026
Support Everything is already there, it seems, so someone just needs to dot the i's. Also, let's replace the old Location maps for good: Ponor (talk) 12:44, February 7, 2026

Support A physical layer would be huge. A public transit layer, for showing train stations, would also be nice. And a political layer (with more borders and fewer streets), since for certain locations and scales I find that highways make the map more cluttered and harder to parse than county borders do.
