Reverse (inverse) partial blocks (Community Wishlist/W353/ja)

Description

There are use cases where someone should be blocked except for certain pages/name spaces. Potential user cases include:

• Arbitration Committee (ArbCom) cases - these frequently involve problematic users, who will sometimes be blocked for some or all of the time the case is open; they should still be allowed to comment on their case.
• Users getting a 2nd chance - if a user blocked as a vandalism-only account requests an unblock, then we sometimes give the user a 2nd chance: Show us that you can help improve one article, and we will unblock you. Unfortunately, the only place the user can do this is on his/her own talk page. It would make this process easier if we could give the user a subpage on which they can do it.
• Discussions about unblocking - sometimes, we have such discussions at places outside of the user's own talk page, such as the Administrators' noticeboard. It would make things easier if the user could respond there directly.
• At times, admins decide that a blocked user is essential for an ongoing discussion, and copy comments the user makes on his/her talk page to the discussion in general. In such cases, it would be easier if the user could respond there directly.
• Editors who have shown themselves unsuited for project space work (e.g. Templates, Wikipedia, etc) but can still edit articles.

Since we have the partial block tool, why not allow us admin to configure the settings to make it block all editing except XXX pages (like an inverse checkbox) rather than the now (only block XXX page). I.e. an inverse partial block, setting exemptions to a sitewide block, rather than the current pages to block. This will be an added feature on top of the partial block tool.

Support This is one where I think it depends on how difficult it would be to implement. Desirable, but not worth a really major investment if the current implementation has kind of painted us into a corner. Jmabel (talk) 07:39, 5 December 2025
