"In other projects" on user pages (Community Wishlist/W431)

Description

On Wikimedia projects, I would like to link to my user pages on other projects via the "In other projects" sidebar section, but this is currently not possible for the following reasons:

  • User pages are outside of Wikidata's notability policy and therefore cannot use Wikidata's inter-wiki link system.
  • Typing [[Commons:User:Example]] or [[c:User:Example]] typically renders as a regular link, not as a sidebar entry.

As a result Wikimedians cannot use the "In other projects" section on their user pages.

The first solution that came to mind was to reconfigure [[c:User:Example]] links to behave in a similar way to [[en:User:Example]] vs [[:en:User:Example]], but this would require mass-replacing all of the current c: links to use :c: instead, across all Wikimedia projects. The same applies to mw:, m:, etc.

A solution I'm proposing instead would be to assign unique dedicated IDs to Wikidata user pages like U123, enabling Wikidata's inter-language link system to function across user pages on all Wikimedia projects while keeping them separate from mainspace items like Q123. I've included some mockups below to illustrate how this could work in practice.

Since Wikimedia users use a unified login, there might be an even smarter solution that doesn't require manually listing the same username multiple times on Wikidata.

I'm not sure though what this solution could be: I still believe users should be able to decide which user pages they want to include, maybe a checkbox system could work better? I hope that by presenting this problem here we can figure it out together!

Support I'd never considered this before now, but after reading the proposal it makes a lot of sense. RogueScholar (talk) 08:22, 22 February 2026
Support I support the feature, but I don't care if the implementation uses Wikibase or not. Note however that if Wikidata ends up being used for this, it seems that the identifiers cannot start with U because Uxxx identifiers are already reserved for the query namespace.
