Description

Especially on Wikipedias that aren't English Wikipedia, many articles use old data graphics (charts etc) even when much more up-to-date data graphics are available.

Plots for the years of publication of the scientific articles referenced in Wikipedia – the same aging exists for charts

I've created categories like c:Category:Charts showing data through 2005 on Commons that have files by the year of their latest data point. Using either the glamorous or the glamorgan tool one can see which mainspace Wikipedia articles use files in any of these categories. For example, here is a scan for charts showing data only up to 2013 that are in use in mainspace.

So far, these categories aren't very useful because they're only useful in theory but not in practice since nobody (else) is acting on them afaik to update or replace outdated charts. Please change this by having a bot notify editors of an article that a data graphic in an article is quite old so that they look for another graphic with newer data. Often such is already on Commons (note: often also already embedded in other language editions of the article) and if not especially Our World in Data may have a much more up-to-date data graphic. Minor caveat: Since these categories also include charts about multi-year more or less temporary or past events such as the COVID-19 pandemic, one would need to exclude a small number of files. A few false positives wouldn't be an issue:

  • The bot would add a notification to the talk page and then users can mark it as checked (e.g. it's fine and intended that the latest year in the datagraphic is old or there is no alternative one could replace it with or an editor acted upon it and replaced the image with another image or an interactive OWID chart). When this marking is done the talk page post would automatically get collapsed and/or be archived if the talk page has it set up.

I've aggregated as much media, tools, discussions and links as I could find about Wikipedia updating and aging content in Wikimedia projects at c:Category:Wikimedia updating and the links there may have some additional info. Wikipedia:WikiProject Data Visualization is active on English Wikipedia but this issue is relatively rare on ENWP but common on smaller wikis (use the tools above to see).
