Add the Gallery page template to the top of all Commons gallery pages (Community Wishlist/W513)
To cite the highly supported wish Community Wishlist Survey 2021/Categories/Display categories before pages
The average Commons [gallery] page is terrible; most have not been edited for several years. Hardly any re[f]lect the choice of images in a category adequately.
There is a template on Commons informing the reader about the category page that can be added to gallery pages, but
- it's missing in many gallery pages
- for many of these pages, it's at the bottom of the page where the reader won't see it
Categories are more up-to-date, contain useful subcategory structures (eg by subtopics) and contain far more files than are included in galleries. Visitors to gallery pages may not know about these and many of them probably think the few files on the page is all there is on Commons for the subject or at least the very best of it. But that's not the case. For example, in galleries about software (even big ones), the latest images included are from 10 years ago. Note that galleries are contained in categories so users who prefer or would like to see a gallery, can easily do so from the category page. A problem is that many Wikipedia articles link to the Commons gallery, not the category.
Please add c:Template:Gallery page – with the corresponding category title as parameter set if the name differs from the gallery page name – to the top of all gallery pages. This needs script development to retrieve the cat name for the gallery pages where the name differs and for moving the template up via regex where it's at the bottom.

This Quarry query shows there are over 20 000 galleries on Wikimedia Commons with only 1 or 2 images (not useful and hiding the usually many files in the category)
