Tool for ignoring contributions of certain users (Community Wishlist/W540)
In real life, it is possible to ignore certain people; it is possible to block their e-mail and block them on social media and on mobile phones, including apps. This can make life better and safer.
I severely miss this feature on the Wikimedia projects. The only feature that exists is blocking certain people in the e-mail preferences. Regrettably, some people happen to be highly annoying to other people — not annoying enough to ask successfully for a block, but the annoyance can be so severe that it hinders the users in editing or participating in conversations.
I propose to introduce a new feature on the Wikimedia projects. Any user should be able to enable "ignore another user" on certain projects or on all projects. It should be possible to select one or all namespaces, such that the user's contributions are not shown on watchlists, in history, etc. Pings are not shown; even edits on the own talk page are not visible. The ignored person should not be aware of this. However, general statistics might be made public or public to arbcom members or admins.
If it is too complex to completely introduce this wish on the short time, realizing isolated parts of it would be very welcome, such as the pings.
- Later addition: Muting users is already possible per Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo
