Description

Update from WMF: We are archiving this wish as wikinews has a comparatively small audience, the Fediverse is a relatively new concept, and there are potential privacy concerns of "validated" users who are contributing to a wiki.

On 4 December 2024 at the Polish Wikinews' village pump I've asked about such an idea to be considered implemented initially only over here, but since this is the meta of all Wikimedia projects, I'd like to expand my suggestion to other Wikinews language versions too.

The fediverse:creator meta tag, while quite new (it emerged around early 2024), is gaining traction at least over Mastodon-oriented community, letting people see who on the Fediverse is responsible for a given entry on a particular website. Some news sites such as The Verge employ such meta tags, if the piece's author is known to be present on the Fediverse. Converting that to the Wikinews, if a Wikinews reader is on the Fediverse too, (s)he can reach out to the author if a need to cast a correction arises.

People with their Fediverse accounts can put an appropriate handle (in the form of "@handle@example.com") in the user preferences page, so the next time someone posts a new article, the fediverse:creator meta tag value will take the handle provided by the user, if it has been set.

On behalf of the Polish Wikinews community, I ask Wikimedia representatives to consider the suggestion so people with their own Fediverse accounts can prove it is really them contributing to the Wikinews initiative.
