Content Translation

  • Problem: The problem in Content Traslations is that it's basically a disaster, it would help a lot better when Google Traslate is built in. Since Google Translate has involved a lot of people, so it's better.
  • Who would benefit: The entire Wikipedia community and those who translates articles.
  • Proposed solution: Add Google Traslate to Content Traslations, since it has been around for so many years so that it is the best translator in the world, and I also believe that all translation services must be improved.
  • More comments: What is done in the new version of Content Traslations is good, but it lacks Google Translate.
  • Phabricator Reports: There are already many from all the Wikipedia communities

(Problema: El problema en Content Traslations es que básicamente es un desastre, ayudaría mucho Google Traslate que es construída por mucha gente, entonces es mejor

Ignacio2403: Sorry, I can sort of read Spanish, but I can't write it.
I think the risk of misunderstandings is smaller if you copy what I say to for example Google Translate, so that you will have both the Spanish automatic translation and the original, than if I do an automatic translation and it is more difficult for someone else to help out and correct it because they don't have the English text so they can see what went wrong. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 09:54, 6 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

And actually, is it realistic to include Google Translate in ContentTranslation? My understanding is that the reason why it currently don't have Google Translate option is non-technical, as in I don't think they have a free api to use. C933103 (talk) 16:09, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you to come by. Yes, my personal preference as a translator is that the original might involve and benefit the proposer's local community, as people will easily find what wish their community has proposed. I might propose a wish in 2019 a flag showing the local language to English translation of a wish (; --Omotecho (talk) 20:41, 13 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ignacio2403: The Language team is already in the process of adding Google Translate to Content Translation. I expect it should be available sometime next year.   • I do not like this suggestion. I think we should focus on using copyleft software. Many free tools provided by data brokers track page users when integrated into a page, which is bad for privacy. HLHJ (talk) 07:56, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • @HLHJ: Any use of 3rd party APIs would be done through a proxy server to prevent them from being able to track individual users.       • That's good, and partially resolves one concern. However, I'd strongly prefer Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Reading#Wikipedia-Translator for articles word by word based on Wiktionary. If I can look up some of the words in a language I don't know, I can generally get the drift, and often a truer idea of what was said than a translation, especially a clumsy machine translation. However, some people prefer machine translation. If we had an easy way to metadataize the manual translations we make in the course of our editing into a copyleft parallel-texts corpus, we'd soon have a very valuable resource for training a copyleft machine translator; is this being done? The Content Translation engine complained about by the original poster is copyleft, and looks helpful, though I didn't know about it. I think making it easier for us to find and train Content Translation would be a better use of resources than making it easier for us to feed data into Google Translate.
