Improved style and internationalized labels in Wikimedia Maps

NoN The elements of this wish either duplicate another wish or are out of scope

  • Problem: Work started last year needs to be completed, a new map style was developed but not released, and international map labels are tied to OpenStreetMap only
  • Who would benefit: All wikimedia projects using maps, OpenStreetMap community (which asks to not translate / transliterate names if not used in the real world)
  • Proposed solution: Complete and deploy Paul Norman's work for map styles (because the current one has its shortfalls) collecting feedback from the user community, integrate better Wikidata with OpenStreetMap in the WMaps infrastructure by switching the data source for map labels to Wikidata and adding Wikidata IDs in the vector tiles source.
  • More comments: Adopts some ideas from "Wikimedia Maps Improvements" proposal
  • Phabricator tickets: T193198, T156682, T159205

Discussion

Thanks for your participation Sabas88. We're withdrawing this wish for two reasons. The first is that the vector tile conversion in T156682 was requested by a different wish, Maps Improvements: Vector Structure, Disputed Borders, Cleaner Style (T156682 is a subtask of the ticket named in that wish, T153282. That leaves the two Wikidata proposals named here. These changes would be popular I'm sure but unfortunately would require architectural changes to Kartographer that are just beyond the scope of what we can handle in a Community Wishlist proposal. —JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 16:44, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@JMatazzoni (WMF): so what will happen when the OSM community starts removing the transliterations introduced by wikipedians in OSM where these don't match with reality? --Sabas88 (talk) 16:53, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Support Support I'm in favor of this proposal and beg you, @JMatazzoni (WMF):, to reconsider the withdrawal. I'd like to emphasise once again, that OSM collects endonyms, and strongly suggests to avoid transliteration. You say yourself these changes are popular. I'm wondering why proposals related to maps are pushed back recently, given such a potent organization like WMF (unfortunately I could not talk directly to Katherine when she was at DINacon). --Geonick (talk) 23:11, 18 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
