Normalize file extensions & cases
Withdrawn by proposer (too many proposals)
- Problem: Today you can have five (or more) totally different files called
File:Foo.jpg
Foo.JPG
,File:FOO.jpg
Foo.Jpg
andFoo.jpeg
on Wikimedia Commons. This confuses people and sometimes results in people adding images into an article that they didn't intend to insert. Also when downloading these files it may cause trouble since some operating systems / files systems don't distinguish between upper and lower case file names. - Who would benefit: Wikimedians adding picture to articles and Wikimedia Commons Users categorizing/managing files
- Proposed solution:
- Disallow the upload of files with a filename equal to any existing except for the case and synonym file-extensions (jpg <-> jpeg).
- Create a list of all existing such pairs to allow the community to rename them.
- Maybe: Automatically rename the file extensions to one format (lowser-case and jpg instead or jpeg) when people upload files with the upload wizard.
