Structured Wikiquote

NoN Proposals for new projects are out of scope for this survey

  • Problem: Wikiquote exists as a "compendium of sourced quotations from notable people and creative works in every language". While the compendium is quite large, it is not very useful. It is difficult, if not impossible to query quotations. You cannot even link to a specific quotation on a page. The categorization of a quotation can be dififcult as well. Should this be on the page for the person that said it or on the page for the work it is in or on the page for event it relates to? Also, it is impossible to get reference querieis from Wikidata other than getting the entire page of quotations. Say you want quotes from Abraham Lincoln (Q91) bur only related to 1860 United States presidential election (Q698842) that would be nearly impossible to get without getting the entire page and parsing through the quotations. Also, it is extremely difficult to get a single quotation in a different language.
  • Who would benefit: Anyone who reads or wants to use the data contained in Wikiquote. Editors of Wikiquote would bennefit as it would be easier to catalog quoatations. Translators of quotations would also bennefit as it would be much easier to see which quotations need to be translated and which translationsa are available.
  • Proposed solution: Structured Wikiquote. Combine all of the Wikiquote communities into a single Wikiquote site that runs on Wikibase. Each quoatation would be a new item as described in the development plan. Some properties would allow linking to Wikidata items, or could allow for linking to other items on Wikiquote.
  • More comments: We could preserve the existing "Pages" by converting these into item queiries. For instance, the page on Abraham Lincoln could be a query that would list all of the quotes, grouped by the date / event propertes. This would also allow these pages to be rendered in the user's prefered language. But I would prefer to have the quote item in the mainspace, but maybe the existing pages can be in a new namespace (with a automatic redirect) or could automatically redirect to a special page with a dynamic query or something.

Unfortunately, this proposal is out of scope for this survey, you should probably post it to Proposals for new projects. Thanks for participating in our survey. MaxSem (WMF) (talk) 00:58, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is a proposal for new project instead it's more like renovating an existing project? C933103 (talk) 14:47, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
C933103, even if so - that would have involved a lot of changes which means that we won't work on this without consensus from the particular wiki's community. MaxSem (WMF) (talk) 05:37, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
