Translate Infobox via WikiTranslation

NoN Language team is already working on this

  • Problem: Infobox aren't getting translated in the translation tool, it shows a plugin error
  • Who would benefit: Multi Language editors and Translators
  • Proposed solution: Translation tool should also translate Infobox into the required language without any error
  • More comments: I'm one of the users in English Wikipedia, who translates articles from English to Telugu, while doing so I figured out that infoboxes cannot be translated and should be added manually after the complete translation is done

Discussion

  • Pinging Pginer-WMF, who may know whether this is already on the Language Team's roadmap. Pau, what are you folks planning for Infoboxes? —JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 18:46, 8 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    • The Language team is currently working on Content translation version 2 which will improve the mapping of templates in general, and infoboxes in particular (we recommend giving it a try and report issues found in this regard at the talk page). Will this make all infoboxes to be successfully transferred across any language? Unfortunately, not. Templates are created independently on each wiki and they are not built to be easy to transfer across different wikis. For Content Translation to successfully transfer a template across languages it requires some template metadata to be available: equivalent templates to be connected in Wikidata, and templateData information for the parameters. Some possible initiatives that can help in this context to solve the underlying problems are: support global templates (technical), encourage communities to use Wikidata-based templates , or complete the existing templates with the missing templateData. The later are community efforts, where the technical solutions to do them exist but could be improved to encourage/facilitate these processes. These initiatives have not been planned yet as far as I know. --Pginer-WMF (talk) 10:58, 9 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In general, infoboxes are templates. The 1st thing we need is sorted fields that come up with translation only. As there are differences like missing fields that do not exist in one language, the CXT needs to offer to fill them. Another problem in translating templates are double used fields like geographic coordinates: In one language, longitude is a separate field, in the other language both coordinates are the same filed, but separated whit a special character. It is up to the developers to make this character to be defined as a separator. Another problem are measured like gallons to liter or miles to kilometers. And all in all what is displayed text to be translated. And never forget to solve it by transferring infoboxes to Wikidata. --Hans Haase (talk) 13:05, 11 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
