Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Archive/Use map for Nearby
Use map for Nearby
Merged with Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Reading/Show nearby or related articles in maps
- Problem: Special:Nearby is not really useful in its current form – it displays a list with some articles, but the user can neither broaden the area nor select a completely other place (or select any place if the browser doesn’t have the necessary API).
- Who would benefit: Users not having the Android or iOS app who want to use Nearby + users of other Wikimedia project with no app: Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.
- Proposed solution: Use a map on Special:Nearby (or let the user chose between the list and map format).

Discussion
- This sounds a lot like Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Reading/Show nearby or related articles in maps the other way round. --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 12:51, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- @AKlapper (WMF): Indeed, I haven't seen it before. This one seems more "concrete" to me (especially since it's not mine initially) but I can withdraw it if Mike Peel wan't to keep his own. Ayack (talk) 15:15, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Ayack: I wouldn't want to pick one of the two, as both would be useful, and they are quite related. Maybe we could merge? I could add "Ideally this functionality could also be used in w:Special:Nearby to show a map of nearby objects rather than a list" somewhere in the other proposal? I'd prefer to merge that way as I think showing the feature in embedded maps would be much more visible (and hence more likely to be widely supported) than showing the feature only on a special page. Thanks. Mike Peel (talk) 15:46, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Mike Peel: Sounds fine for me. I let you merge it and I withdraw this one. Thanks. Ayack (talk) 17:13, 9 November 2018 (UTC)
