Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Archive/add publish as e-book tool to allow offline reading

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

add publish as e-book tool to allow offline reading

  • Problem: wikisource reading requires internet connection to read
  • Who would benefit: readers with e-book readers, and off line readers
  • Proposed solution: create a publish as e-book tool to render wikisource output in e-book format
  • More comments: e-books while a cul-de-sac output, retains some loyalty among readers. reading pdf's on e-reader is not optimal. there is a body of readers here which we can target

@Slowking4: This might be phab:T97672 and phab:T74077? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 03:43, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

thank you, related to Book Creator lack of support. but don't know if easier. don't know if need an app, as in T74077, just some code to format the content friendly to e-readers. but would be accessible to mobile. typically e-reader users sync to desktop.
rather than create a book, i would like to see a "download in e-book", since download as PDF is not friendly. see also: https://www.kobo.com/help/en-US/article/784/file-formats-you-can-use-on-your-kobo-ereader and Mozilla Firefox has a reader mode in the browser https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/reader/ -- Slowking4 (talk) 19:54, 1 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Slowking4: Is this wsexport tool not sufficient for you ? I know that its need to improve. Last year proposal was same for Community Wishlist Survey 2017/Wikisource/Improve export of electronic books. Jayantanth (talk) 21:00, 4 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
yes, that is the idea. but integrated into the wikisource main menu as a published format. Slowking4 (talk) 03:28, 7 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That export tool does not have the option to export ebooks in vertical layout (optionally used by some Asian languages), and also lack the support for international language fonts like CJK languages. C933103 (talk) 02:53, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
MediaWiki does not support vertical text. --Izno (talk) 04:33, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
MediaWiki does not (fully) support vertical text (yet). Doesn't mean individual functional tools couldn't be improved to support it. C933103 (talk) 07:05, 14 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This proposal is mostly encompassed by Community Wishlist Survey 2019/Wikisource/Improve export of electronic books. I think the bits that aren't around around better advertising of the exports and integrating links into sidebars and elsewhere, and that stuff should only happen after the tool is on a more stable footing. I'll archive this, if that's okay? Sam Wilson 00:59, 15 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]
