Community Wishlist Survey 2021/Multimedia and Commons/Allow SDC SPARQL queries to more easily inteact with Wikidata queries

Allow SDC SPARQL queries to more easily inteact with Wikidata queries

  • Problem: SDC uses a lot of Wikidata items to encode information about files: License, authorship, source, or depict statements are encoded using wikidata item IDs. Wikimedia Commons Query Service (WCQS) allows SPARQL queries to look up this metadata. Unfortunately many WCQS queries that need to access information from Wikidata, needs to use "service <https://query.wikidata.org/sparql>" which can access only few thousand wikidata items before failing. With 65M files on Commons, with number of files with SDC properties quickly unceasing, we need to be able to run queries that can access much lager number of Wikidata items.
  • Who would benefit: Users who query or maintain SDC properties
  • Proposed solution: Integrate WCQS and WDQS more closely to allow more information to be passed in-between
  • More comments: An example query which is hard to do at the moment: Find statements using redirected wikidata items
