Requests or Suggestions

NoN Overlaps with talk pages project

  • Problem: It's very important to get updates after you make a request or suggestion. This is especially true in cases where editors are obligated to announce their intention in the discussion page and wait a certain amount of time before taking action. It's too easy to see a problem, leave a message with a proposed course of action, and then forget all about it - because there were no comments by other editors.
  • Who would benefit: Editors
  • Proposed solution: Allow editors to mark themselves as "authors" of a specific section in a talk page, which means they should be notified of any new edit in that section. Also, allow creation of reminders to revisit a certain talk page in X amount of time.

Discussion

  • In effect this is section-watchlisting, which was part of the discussion had with Discussion Tools - it's particularly difficult in order to make it handle reformatting of section headers, merging, and so on. At the time when they asked which we're rather have, page or section-watchlisting, the consensus was the former was the critical, the latter a nice to have. It sounds similar, but in this context I brought it up for a specific purpose - following comments (or lack thereof) on a discussion that I initiated. This discussion is actually a perfect examle: I'd like to be notified whenever a new comment is added in reply to my proposal above. In this particular case, "section-watchlisting" won't be necessary because each proposal is automatically divided to a separate page. There needs to be some way for me to define this discussion as a special interest. As I explained above, the same goes for proposals made in the form of templates. Notifications are needed for new comments or the complete lack of comments after a certain period of time. --Joalbertine (talk) 19:36, 21 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Joalbertine: That makes sense, but still kind of confusing. User:MemeGod27 3:20, 18 November 2020 (EST)
  • Section watchlisting would be great, but the other part of this is just reminding yourself to check back in on proposals you've made where w:WP:SILENCE would be sufficient to take action. I know there are some gadgets that help you manage a to-do list, and improvements to those to implement functionality like timed reminders would be fantastic. Right now, the old-fashioned method of just keeping a list of links in one's sandbox works but isn't very efficient. {{u|Sdkb}}talk 03:04, 19 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Section watchlisting will be part of the talk pages project, so look forward to updates on that in the coming year. Page reminders on the other hand is something that we investigated following the 2019 survey and unfortunately had to decline. You can read more about that in the status report. That said there's not anything Community Tech can do help with this proposal. Sorry! Thanks for participating in the survey, MusikAnimal (WMF) (talk) 18:39, 4 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
