New skin, appearance, home page for Chinese Wikinews

NoN Requires community consensus/Does not require engineering resources

  • Problem: Design and provide a new home page for Chinese Wikinews that is beautiful and modern. The current appearance of Chinese Wikininews is very ugly. For example, the home page, or even the general news page. However, due to the small number of local community, there is no professional, so there has been no solution, hoping to create a more beautiful appearance in Chinese Wikininews.
  • Who would benefit: Chinese Wikinews readers, brand image and Chinese Wikinews local community, editors, users.
  • Proposed solution: Personally, I think the overall appearance of this site is a little ugly. At present, this Vector is a skin on this site. Personally, I think it is not suitable for a news website, and it seems a little ugly to use it as a news report. Suggestions can find some, or create some look more like news sites, and very beautiful appearance. For example, Timeless and use this as the default look for this site. Wikis have a variety of different looks and skins, and we can create a skin and a new homepage design that fits the look of a news site, such as the South China Morning Post. Anyway, I think we can have and create another look, and I personally think the current look is a little ugly. This will make the site look new and better than before.

  • I don't think Community Tech team do design? C933103 (talk) 22:20, 15 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Two comments. 1) Changing the skin among existing skins, or changing the home page, is a local community consensus needed and requires no technical investment. 2) If you want a whole new skin, I think that is outside CommTech's size/scope. --Izno (talk) 20:55, 18 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello Kitabc12345. Thank you for your proposal. Unfortunately, the Wikimedia Foundation doesn't build main pages for the communities. But that doesn't mean we don't have any ideas!
    1. Would you be interested in asking the community to have the Desktop Improvements for all (logged in and out) as default? See how this very page looks like with the changes enabled. We are particularly interested in enabling this on large and mid-sized wikis, so mostly Wikipedias. Chinese Wikinews, although small, are an option, too.
    2. Maybe some day (not before June 2022 and perhaps not before June 2023) we could build widgets that could be used on main pages. But that's not a promise. I only mention this to let you know that we are aware of such an idea.
    3. You could check main pages of other wikis and reuse the code. This is not optimal but at least, it's possible right now.

Ok, then it seems that this wish can't be done. I understand! Thank you. @SGrabarczuk (WMF)@ Kitabc12345 (talk) 09:21, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
OK, let's see if the local community is willing to use this Desktop Improvements at that time. Thank you for providing options. Kitabc12345 (talk) 09:28, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The new skin is actually an interesting extension of my idea to make the site look better overall.
I hope to have a new home page, this is the local community to support the desire, because the original home page is not so modern, people are looking for a new design.
The desire for a new skin can be put on hold or shelved. I think the new skin will make the website look better, the original one was a little ugly, but in fact, it's ok to lose this one, thank you.
We'll see if the local community is willing to use Desktop Improvements.
The problem we ran into with the local homepage design desire was that the new homepage design of the local community users was ugly, so they had to go back to the original.
I tried to copy wikinews' homepage in other languages, but it was a huge project. No one in the busy real world does it anymore, because copying is messy. A lot of pages and code need to be created, which takes a lot of effort and time to translate, review, and copy. Kitabc12345 (talk) 09:56, 21 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Kitabc12345: thank you for your proposal but I'm afraid I will have to archive it for the reasons already mentioned in previous comments. Let me know if you have any concerns. DMaza (WMF) (talk) 15:12, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    Ok. I understand, thank you. 112.118.53.68 16:36, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
