Community Wishlist Survey 2023/Archive/Create Wikipedia article stub from Wikidata using ChatGPT

Create Wikipedia article stub from Wikidata using ChatGPT
This proposal contradicts an established policy
- Problem: When a Wikidata item has enough information to start a Wikipedia article on a person, it's still a cumbersome/repetitive task to create the article's initial paragraph(s).
- Proposed solution: Create a tool that feeds Wikidata info to ChatGPT, then creates a userspace draft with ChatGPT's text plus en:Template:Biography.
- Who would benefit: (1) Wikipedia, as it helps starting articles. Wikipedia editors with some knowledge/awareness of Wikidata, as it saves them writing highly similar texts and reminds them of available basic data. (2) Wikidata, as it encourages adding more details to items.
- More comments: This would be particularly helpful for starting biographies; perhaps the idea is also useful for other specific article types. The tool could be offered for the languages that ChatGPT speaks (currently English, and to a lesser extent French, German, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese). It could be made available only if the Wikidata item has a certain minimum of properties.

Discussion
- This is a very very bad idea. ChatGPT is a language generator but has no knowledge base. It's a fantastic bullshit generator and not more. You should read this piece https://themarkup.org/hello-world/2023/01/28/decoding-the-hype-about-ai. Or any other piece by Emily Bender on the topic. Moreover, ChatGPT is a commercial solution. The code is fully closed abd there is absolutely no transparency. The CNET experiment should be a good reason to never use ChatGPT to feed Wikipedia (https://futurism.com/cnet-ai-plagiarism). - Wikimedia's vision is - "Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That’s our commitment." Creating articles using chatGPT (or any other AI tool) doesn't align with our current vision so this proposal will be archived. Thank you for participating in the wishlist survey 2023. - JSengupta-WMF
- I oppose this per above. Also, I tested its translation abilities, and it gave very poor results, very bad translation in a word by word way. – 2405:4802:36C:3B0:1C90:9B74:603F:E6F 12:47, 30 January 2023 (UTC)
