Community health initiative/Interaction Timeline/Diffs

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Types of diffs that we could potentially use in the Timeline. For these examples, I have used diffs from edits I personally made on English Wikipedia: complex & simple.

Desktop two-column wikitext diff[edit]

The left column shows the page content from the selected 'before' revision, highlighting in yellow the content that was removed. The right column shows the page content from the selected 'after' revision, highlighting in blue the content that was added.

This is the standard diff view for most users. My hypothesis is that this will be both the easiest and least controversial to implement into the Timeline.

Mobile one-column wikitext diff[edit]

This view is currently only accessible via the mobile skin, but it would be straightforward to port it to desktop if appropriate. The Red highlighted text shows content that was in the 'before' revision that has been removed in the 'after' revision. The green highlighted text shows content that was added.

Desktop/mobile visual diff[edit]

The Visual diff feature is not yet in beta. It is not ready for us to use. It renders the highlighting in a visual manner, which is arguably easier to read that wikitext.

Red highlighted text shows content that was in the 'before' revision that has been removed in the 'after' revision. The green highlighted text shows content that was added.

Desktop two-column wikitext conflict view[edit]

The two-column edit conflict view is a feature that has some interactivity in the edit. It is only available on desktop and is only used in circumstances when two conflicting edits to the same page need to be compared and consolidated. (e.g. two users both edit the same page at the same time.)

The Timeline is probably not an appropriate use for this type of diff.
