Countervandalism Network/Verification

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
Countervandalism network

The countervandalism network
is a distinct group. It is neither
affiliated with nor managed by the
Wikimedia Foundation.

Shortcut:
CVN/V

Bot commands are restricted to voiced users. This is to prevent misuse of bot commands in #cvn-* feed channels.

If your wiki account is relatively new (e.g. fewer than 300 edits), or has a history of abuse, you may be refused at the discretion of staff and local channel operators.

Everyone is welcome to join and idle in any channel at anytime. The below procedure is only for issuing bot commands.

The CVN channels are owned and operated by Countervandalism Network, and not by Wikipedia or Wikipedia's Counter-Vandalism Unit.

Requesting access[edit]

  1. Your nickname must be registered with NickServ on the IRC network (follow IRC/Instructions). It is recommended that you enable "Enforce" to prevent others from using your nickname while you're away: /msg NickServ set enforce on
  2. Make sure you're currently logged in using /msg NickServ identify your_password_here. Some clients and bouncers can do this automatically for you, so be sure to look for that.
  3. If this is is the first time you're asking for access in a CVN channel on Libera Chat, you may need to first confirm which wiki account you own.
    • If you already have a Wikimedia IRC cloak, you can skip this step.
    • If you have confirmed your account during the Libera Chat migration, you can re-use the old edit "diff" link from Libera Confirmed accounts.
    • Otherwise, make an edit below under "Account confirmation", and enter your NickServ name and wiki account name. Then obtain a link to your edit "diff" from the history page.
  4. Send your request.
    • If your channel has local operators that are online, feel free to ask them for a voice. You can check who the local operators are by running command /cs flags #cvn-CHANNEL Any user name listed with "(local_op)" after their name is a local operator. If they're online, feel free to ping their nickname and ask for a voice in the channel. Include the link to your edit "diff" (unless you have a Wikimedia IRC cloak).
    • Alternatively, join #countervandalismconnect, and say "!staff I am wiki [[User:MyUsername]], and I'd like to request voice for #cvn-CHANNEL. LINK_TO_DIFF". The !staff command will notify CVN staff. Please be patient; sometimes no staff are available. They will see your request when they return and can process it even when you are not online at the same time.

After[edit]

Once you're confirmed, you will be automatically voiced in the channel when you join. For security reasons, local operators may remove access to bot command voice after four months of inactivity. In rare cases, a local operator may require further confirmation or defer you to CVN staff.

Any user's access may be revoked at any time at local operators' discretion. Users may appeal to CVN staff if they believe they have been treated unfairly.

Account confirmation[edit]

Add yourself to the list using the format IRC_NAME {{/Name|WIKI_NAME}}.
