In 2019, an anti-racist collective objected to an alphabet mural created in 1949 by two artists on behalf of the City of Bern for the Wylergut primary school, sparking a public competition about its future. The association "Das Wandbild muss weg!" won with a plan to remove and transfer it to the Bern Historical Museum. The museum adopted the mural and hosts an exhibition curated by the association. The show frames the mural within broader discussions of colonial legacies, structural racism, and society’s responsibility toward contested heritage. Shirana Shahbazi was commissioned to replace the original alphabet mural at the Wylergut school with a new artistic intervention.
