Communication Projects Group/Projects/Discussion Outlets

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Assigned: Mike Halterman

Tasks: List and summarize the various outlets in which Wikimedians can go to discuss the various projects.

Outlets

[edit]

If you'd like to read new information and questions about Wikipedia, or perhaps you'd like to supply some information and ask a question of your own, then please read about these avenues and find the link that best meets your needs.

[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation has a place for questions and discussions about the Foundation itself, and all the projects. It is called the Metapub. (Here)

For discussion specifically related to the website Meta-Wiki, go here to Babel.

For Wikipedia-related discussion and assistance, consult the Village Pump page here, and then find one of the six portals that best meet your needs.

Similar help areas exist for Wiktionary, Wikinews, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikispecies, Wikisource, Wikiversity, and Wikimedia Commons.

An editor-contributed weekly newsletter, summarizing the big events on Wikipedia that week, is the Wikipedia Signpost. (Here)

An independent web magazine which summarizes the recent events of all the different projects is called Wikizine, and is updated daily. (Here)

[edit]

There are two large blog aggregators (in which blog writers can opt-in and any Wikimedia-related posts they write can be published on a separate website) that are in wide use with many Wikimedians. They are Planet Wikimedia (Here) and Open Wiki Blog Planet (Here).

Mailing lists

[edit]

All of the mailing lists of the Wikimedia Foundation can be accessed by going to this link. On that page, links to all of the mailing lists are displayed, with a short summary of what discussion goes on at what list. Please pick the list on which you want to talk wisely, so you are on-topic.

IRC

[edit]

IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a way for people to discuss issues and have grievances addressed in real-time. Here is a list of all the chat rooms on the IRC network freenode. In order to get your question addressed by the right people and in a timely fashion, make sure to read the summary of what each channel is, and pick the correct one that suits your needs.
