Travel & VISA Team Participants Documentation

Lú-hîng

  • Q: Guá kám su-iàu tshiam-tsìng?
A: Please refer to our website. Please note that if you are a participant from a region that is labelled as "VISA required", the organizer will assist you in applying for an e-visa for the conference. We do not recommend applying through Taiwanese Embassies on your own, especially for those subsidized participants, as we will not reimburse travel expenses incurred from your self-application for a visa.
  • Q:I am a participant from Mainland China/Hong Kong/Macau. How do I obtain entry documents for Taiwan?
A: Participants from Hong Kong and Macau can apply for e-visas directly. Please follow the regulations provided by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Hong Kong and Macau. You do not need to apply for a conference e-visa from Wikimedia Taiwan. Participants from the People's Republic of China, due to the regulations imposed by both governments and the possibility of adjustments in response to external circumstances, must apply independently and on a case-by-case basis. The Wikimedia Taiwan can only provide administrative documents to assist you with your visa application.
  • Q: If my scholarship flight is to Taipei (TPE), how do I get to Kaohsiung? Are travel expenses covered by the scholarship?
A: Our staffs will assist you at the airport, including delivering you traffic card and high-speed rail ticket.
  • Q: Internet Connectivity: local SIM card or eSIM?
A: It depends on different situation any your needs:
  • Usually purchasing prepaid cards/eSIM from OTAs or service providers like Klook/AirAlo or so will be the cheaper.
  • Your telecom might provide international roaming but it's usually more expensive but reliable some times, and choose this if you need IP address from home country.
  • You can also purchase physical SIM cards / eSIM upon arrival at the TPE/KHH airport, provided by Taiwanese telecom companies Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far EasTone.
  • Q: Are credit cards generally accepted?
A: International EMV (VISA/Mastercard/JCB) Credit/Debit cards are accepted in chain stores, department stores, malls, CVS, fast food, restaurants.
  • Amex/Diners Club/China UnionPay might work but they are less accepted and known to be rejected sometimes.
For individual stores, stands, night markets: expect cash only.
The iPass card (provided in the conference swag pack), is also accepted in transportation methods like MRT, TR, Bus (remember to tap when you get on AND off!), and in some stores like CVS, drink joint, fast food chains. Reloadable at CVS and Metro stations using cash.
The easiest way to check: find acceptance logo at door front, or simply show the card to ask clerks :)
  • For Japanese Visitors, PayPay bridge service is just launched, look for TWQR acceptance and scan with your PayPay app. [1]
  • Q: How much cash do I need?
A: The amount varies and it depends on how are you going spend. Usually 2000~3000 TWD / 100 USD per day should be enough.
Depending on the exchange rates, you can change money in your home country, TPE/KHH airports upon arrival (Bank of Taiwan and Mega Bank), or withdraw from ATMs if you have bank cards running with international banking networks.
  • Q: How do I use public bikes?
A: Kaohsiung's public bike service provider YouBike is open for foreigners to rent. However as a foreigner you need to enroll injury insurance, and pay refundable deposit using your credit card in advance.
  • Q: Timetable for transportation? How much does it cost / How long does it take from X to Y?

Registration/Payment

  • Q: I have filled out the registration form! Can I start planning my trip to Taiwan now?
A: Not yet! To provide all participants with a safe, comfortable, and UCOC-compliant conference experience, the open registration process for this conference is divided into two phases. All registrants must first undergo a security screening process by the Wikimedia Foundation before receiving a payment notification for the second stage. Your attendance is confirmed only after you receive a ticket with a QR code following payment. You are responsible for any losses incurred due to premature travel arrangements.
  • Q: How long does the security screening process take
A: We will try our best to shorten the time; please check your email regularly.
  • Q: My application was rejected! I need an explanation!
A: We are sorry to hear this, but for privacy reasons, the organizers will not know the reason for the rejection. For any questions, please contact the Trust & Safety team via ca(_AT_)wikimedia.org
  • Q: I am not a local participant and do not have a PayPal account. Do you have any other payment methods?
A: Yes, please choose PayPal for your payment. You can pay directly with a credit card without registering for an account on PayPal.
  • Q: I don't have a credit card and am not a resident of Taiwan. Can I pay on-site?
A: We cannot reserve your spot for on-site payment. Please pay within the deadline. You can ask friends or family with credit cards or PayPal for assistance. You can also ask a Taiwanese friend (if you know any) to help you pay via bank transfer in local currency, and then agree on a repayment method with the person making the payment.
  • Q: I am a local participant from Taiwan, can I pay with PayPal or a credit card?
A: We're sorry, due to restrictions under Taiwanese financial laws, PayPal cannot provide services for transferring funds between Taiwanese accounts or from Taiwanese credit cards to Taiwanese accounts.
