The EcoWIKI PROJECT is a group of Wikimedians committed to advancing free knowledge on Environment, Ocean, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH). Our aim is to bridge the gap between environmental challenges and open access to reliable, well structured information by contributing to Wikimedia projects such as Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. We believe that access to accurate information is a powerful tool for awareness, advocacy, education, and action. By creation an improving content on sustainability, water security, sanitation, climate change, biodiversity, and Ocean conservation. EcoWIKI PROJECT empowers communities, educators, researchers, and policymakers to make informed decisions for more sustainable future. OUR group will serve as a collaborative hub for experts, students, activists, and volunteers across East Africa and beyond, using Wikimedia as a platform to amplify voices, share knowledge, and build capacity in environmental education.

Objectives

  • Content Development

Create, improve, and translate Wikipedia articles related to Water, Sanitation, Hygiene, Environment, Climate change and Ocean conservation.

  • Open Data contribution

Contribute structured and accessible environmental and WASH data to Wikidata for global use in research, education and advocacy.

  • Awareness and Education

Use Wikimedia platforms to raise awareness about environmental sustainability and promote educational resources for schools, universities, and communities.

  • Community engagement

Organize edit-a-thons, workshops, and training sessions to build capacity among new and existing Wikimedians with interest in environment and sustainability.

  • Partnership and Engagement

Establish collaborations with NGOs, academic institutions, government bodies, and grassroots organizations working on environment and WASH issues.

  • Knowledge Equity

Ensure underrepresented knowledge especially in Africa is documented and made freely available in multiple languages including Swahili.

  • Visual Documentation

Capture and uploads photographs, infographics, and other media on environmental issues to Wikimedia Commons, making them accessible for education and advocacy.

  • Sustainability Advocacy

Promote the use of Wikimedia projects as tools for achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Activities

  • Edit-a-thon and writing challenge

Organize regular edit-a-thons focused on water, sanitation, hygiene, environment, climate change, and ocean conservation. Run annual or thematic writing contests such as Wiki4water, Wiki4Ocean week.

  • Workshop and Training sessions

Conduct capacity building workshops to train new editors, students, and activists on how to contribute to Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. Offer specialized training on environmental data contribution to Wikidata.

  • Photowalks and Documentation campaign

Host photowalks to capture local environmental issues like rivers, waste management, forests, coastlines and upload them Wikimedia Commons. Launch a Wiki Loves Environment photo campaign to document natural resources, challenges, and conservation efforts.

  • Outreach and Partnership

Collaborate with NGOs, Universities, and community organizations to integrate Wikimedia projects into environmental awareness and education programs. Partner with schools, and youth groups to introduce Wikimedia as a learning and advocacy tool.

  • Awareness Campaigns

Use hashtags and online campaigns such as #Wiki4Environment, #Wiki4Waterand #EcoWiki to engage a wider audience. Celebrate international days like World water Day , World Environment Day and World Ocean Day with targeted Wikimedia contributions.

  • Content Translation Projects

Translate environmental knowledge from other languages to Swahili and other regional languages to improve access to local communities.

  • Research and Documentation

Compile and share open educational resources, case studies, and reports through Wikimedia platforms. Contribute data sets and references to Wikidata for use in research and policy discussions.

  • Community Building

Establish regular meetups (vitual and physical) to strengthen the EcoWIKI PROJECT community. Mentor new contributors and encourage knowledge exchange among members.
