Abstract:
Choosing the most appropriate content for an educational program presents a multifaceted challenge, particularly when attempting to balance relevance, student engagement, and learning. In the context of Wikipedia, content selection must not only align with the academic goals of the course but also address critical knowledge gaps in areas where information may be missing or underrepresented. Course leaders would like to ensure that students work on meaningful and informative content while contributing relevant material to a broader Wikipedia audience.

Considering these aspects, this session is designed to provide course leaders with generalized, actionable strategies for identifying such content on Wikipedia. Participants will explore methods to find knowledge gaps in their respective domains and evaluate the educational potential of filling them.

After a brief introduction to knowledge gaps on Wikipedia, the session will introduce participants to various sources, tools, and workflows for identifying knowledge gaps, using public health as an example topic. The participants will work together with the session leaders in identifying knowledge gaps in their topic areas of interest. After identifying these gaps, the session will include an interactive discussion about choosing content within the identified gaps based on its educational value.
