Ikusgela: how we made 170 free education videos for Wikipedia

Abstract:
The aim of this session is to present and analyze the creation of Ikusgela, a multimedia project led by the Basque Wikimedians User Group. The project seeks to enhance free educational content by producing high-quality videos that enrich Wikipedia articles, particularly in the Basque language. Over the past three years, we have followed a structured methodology to create and distribute educational videos. This includes identifying relevant topics, collaborating with experts, ensuring accuracy, and adapting content for further use in Wikipedia articles to support knowledge dissemination.

Since its inception, Ikusgela has produced more than 170 free educational videos, significantly improving the multimedia content available on Basque Wikipedia. Their inclusion in Wikipedia articles increases accessibility, learning and discoverability, particularly for Basque-speaking audiences, and contributes to the broader movement of free knowledge. We think that this project serves as a model for similar initiatives in other languages, reinforcing the role of Wikimedia projects in promoting linguistic diversity and digital literacy for a multimedia-leaning generation.
