Abstract:
For the past two years, the Education and Human Rights Program of Wikimedia Argentina have been reflecting on the challenges that AI brings to the classroom and the role of Wikimedia Projects in this debate. After addressing this issue in a general way in Wikipuentes, we felt it necessary to open a new course so that teachers could be trained on AI and, from knowing the basics of these tools, position themselves about the uses in the classroom. In order to do so, we allied with the Latin American representation of the MIL Alliance of UNESCO and invited several experts in AI to put together the classes. The course was developed in October 2024 and had more than 200 participants in the synchronous classes.

The purpose of this presentation is to share the experience of this course, addressing its foundations, its development and implementation and the challenges we faced. Beyond the concrete results of the experience, we are interested in transmitting the lessons that this course left us, especially linked to the importance of accompanying teacher training on urgent issues that have a direct impact on their classrooms. We believe that these lessons can be useful for other programs or groups facing similar situations in their countries.
