The Wikimania 2024 conference marked a significant milestone in the ongoing effort to strengthen education programs within the Wikimedia community. As a participant in this year’s event, I had the privilege of contributing to the hackathon, where I collaborated with other like-minded individuals to develop an innovative tool aimed at addressing one of the most persistent challenges in education: copyright infringement.

The tool, designed specifically for new trainees, serves as a powerful aid in detecting text directly sourced from the Internet. With plagiarism and copyright issues becoming more prevalent in the digital age, this tool is poised to be a game-changer, ensuring that content shared on Wikimedia platforms is both original and respectful of intellectual property rights.

The significance of this development extends beyond just the creation of the tool. It reflects a broader trend within Wikimedia’s education programs, which have increasingly transcended national boundaries. In recent years, these programs have succeeded in attracting students from universities around the world, fostering a truly global community of learners and educators.

This expansion of the education programs has been one of the highlights of Wikimania 2024. By bringing together students, educators, and professionals from diverse backgrounds, the Wikimedia community is creating a collaborative environment that encourages the exchange of knowledge across cultures and disciplines. The global participation seen this year is a testament to the inclusive and far-reaching impact of Wikimedia’s initiatives.

During the hackathon, the development of the copyright detection tool exemplified the collaborative spirit that Wikimania fosters. Working alongside participants from different countries, we were able to pool our expertise and perspectives, ultimately creating a solution that addresses a universal issue in education. This collective effort highlights the power of collaboration in solving complex problems and improving the quality of educational resources available on Wikimedia platforms.

As Wikimedia’s education programs continue to grow and evolve, the tools and solutions developed at events like Wikimania will play a crucial role in supporting the next generation of learners. By breaking down geographical barriers and promoting cross-cultural collaboration, Wikimedia is not only enriching its own content but also contributing to a more interconnected and educated world.
