Wikipedia at University: Another year of working alongside higher education institutions in Argentina
From March to November, the Education Program carried out the “Wikipedia at the University” initiative, working with teachers, researchers, and higher education students on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.
In this edition, we wanted to highlight that the knowledge produced by universities feeds and validates a large part of the articles on Wikipedia and that, by publishing content under free licenses, universities can contribute to democratizing access to knowledge, highlighting stories, figures, and topics relevant to Argentina and Latin America that are often absent or underrepresented.
Wikipedia at university in numbers
- 7 provinces
- 12 institutions
- 16 workshops (9 virtual, 7 in-person)
- 432 participants
- 212 improvements to Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata
Testimonials from teachers and students who participated this year
“It was rewarding to be able to accompany a group of students in their first experiences of co-editing. The training and collective editing experience allowed us to consolidate the learning processes we had been developing in the classroom.”
“The experience allowed me to recognize the strengths and limitations of Wikipedia. (...) I understood that it is not enough to ask students to ‘search Wikipedia’: it is necessary to teach them how to read the encyclopedia critically.”
“I didn't use Wikipedia because I thought it wasn't reliable. I learned that there are many people behind the scenes working to validate the information.”
For Wikimedia Argentina, this partnership with higher education institutions is key to promoting critical thinking, raising awareness of academic knowledge, and expanding free knowledge with a local perspective. We thank all the institutions, teachers, and students who took part in Wikipedia at University in 2025!
