New partnerships – CEM

Wikimedia Brazil has signed a new partnership for 2025 with the Center for Metropolitan Studies (CEM) at Universidade de São Paulo (USP). The center conducts research in social sciences, such as public policies, inequality, and urban issues. The partnership with WMB will enable digital, media, and information literacy for CEM members, a training workshop for Brazilian researchers, and editing activity on science in Brazil. In addition, it will improve content on Wiki about topics related to the center's research.

Wikiversity Workshop – Observatory of Latin American Women Intellectuals

On February 20, Wikimedia Brazil held a workshop so members and researchers of the "Observatory of Latin American Women Intellectuals" project (at Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – UERJ) could learn about Wikiversity.

Participants of the workshop

The research group focuses on analyzing the presence of female intellectuals from Latin America on different digital platforms. The workshop sought to encourage undergraduate and graduate students in literature at UERJ to use the platform and promote open science.

The Brazilian Linguistics Olympiad

Wikimedia Brasil will once again support the Brazilian Linguistics Olympiad (OBL) by offering tutorials and assistance in creating and managing the Outreach Dashboard. This will be the third edition of the Olympiad – one of the four Olympic activities of the Autumn School of Linguistics (ELO). The activity is carried out by students participating in ELO, and is considered the last phase of the Olympics.

During the event, participants will be mentored by Wikimedia Brasil staff and volunteers as part of the program. In this activity, each student writes an encyclopedic article about a language and then publishes it on Wikipedia in Portuguese. With the help of tutors, a list of mandatory topics, and a bibliography selected by the Olympiad organizers, students produce high-quality work in just two weeks of dedication.

Emergence of digital university extension: good practices and directions

Wikimedia Brasil members João Alexandre Peschanski, Amanda Chevtchouk Jurno and Alexander Maximilian Hilsenbeck Filho just published the paper “Emergence of digital university extension: good practices and directions”, available at: https://periodicos.ufmg.br/index.php/textolivre/article/view/56372/47566.

The research presents good practices of Digital University Extension through empirical cases that use Wiki resources with a focus on technological sovereignty, the institutionalization of projects and the development of open educational resources.

The paper also provides a historical overview of extension practices in Brazil, indicates the challenges of university education in the digital society of the 21st century, and presents the growing orientation for universities to develop contemporary skills related to digital extension activities.
