Inclusive Climate Learning with Wikimedia Reaches Special School in Kumasi
Summary: An inclusive climate education workshop at Garden City Special School introduced students with disabilities and teachers to climate change concepts using adapted Open Educational Resources and Wikimedia content. The session demonstrated how visual learning and open knowledge platforms can make climate education more accessible.

Main story
An outreach brought inclusive climate education to learners at Garden City Special School in Kumasi, Ghana, using adapted open resources and Wikimedia-supported learning approaches to ensure students with disabilities can participate in climate knowledge creation and access.
The workshop engaged 32 students and 5 teachers through interactive activities using pictures, simplified explanations, and visual storytelling. Facilitators demonstrated how Wikimedia platforms, particularly Wikipedia content and open media resources can be adapted into accessible teaching materials. Teachers explored ways to integrate these resources into their lessons, strengthening digital literacy and inclusive pedagogy.
“This was eye-opening. We now have new ways to teach climate topics so our students can better relate and participate,” shared one of the participating teachers.
The initiative is part of the project “Expanding Open Climate Education to Schools for Persons with Disabilities,” which aims to train at least 30 educators across special schools in Ghana, provide inclusive OER toolkits, and deploy offline solutions such as Kiwix to address connectivity barriers. The project shows how Wikimedia resources can support equitable climate education and empower learners who are often underrepresented in open knowledge spaces.
Practical learning points
- Adapt Wikimedia and OER materials using visuals and simplified language.
- Combine offline tools (e.g., Kiwix) with classroom facilitation in low-connectivity settings.
- Engage teachers alongside students to support long-term classroom integration.
Call to action
