Library of IME-USP Workshop: Edits in History of Mathematics

Workshop
In late 2025, the Library of the Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science, University of São Paulo (IME-USP), in association with the professor David Pires Dias, organized a two-days-workshop with undergraduate students of the discipline “History of Mathematics”. In this information literacy program, the students learned the basic principles of editing in Wikipedia, were shown how to contribute with free knowledge and were exposed to the community of the platform.
Stela Madruga, head of the Library of IME-USP, and Victor Aiabe, wikimedian in residence, guided the class on research strategies, reliable sources and citation practices.
In groups, the students’ve chosen mathematical areas, concepts or important figures to work with their Portuguese-language pages. In November, each group presented what they could change in their articles, any difficulties that they might have had and the general experience of what it was to contribute to the biggest free encyclopedia.

Outcome
This was the first workshop made by the Library of IME-USP in a classroom. While the students learned how to edit, improve and share quality information, the information literacy program also had a successful attempt to expand their relationship with the academic community, highlighting the power and the necessity of critical engagement, digital literacy and community writing.
